Looking at the pictures of Springfield Armory's Mil-Spec 1911s (here's an example: http://springfield-armory.com/images/pistols/a1/PB9108L.jpg), it looks like the frame is parkerized a different color than the slide, which usually denotes an alloy frame. Given that the Mil-Spec seems kind of on the light side for a 1911 (35.6 oz. compared to 38 oz. I've seen for other models) I was wondering if anyone could confirm whether or not the Mil-Spec has an alloy frame.

In that case, let me ask another question: Does the lack of a beavertail grip safety affect felt recoil much?

IMO, no.
The beavertail was designed to help people who suffered from hammer bite. Nowadays, everyone thinks they are required for a decent 1911.

Not to me it doesn't. However, with my large hands it has taken some practice to get all of my flesh out of the way so that it doesn't get bitten. If I were to buy another 1911 I would make sure I had the larger grip safety for that reason alone.
