Hey yall,

Lately I've been really thinking about putting together an upper chambered in 6.8SPC for a hog and deer gun. The question I have is if anybody has any experience using the DPMS 20" 6.8 heavy barrel? How accurate is this barrel? By the way I was going to ask this on the 68 forum but for some reason I have not recieved an email to verify my account.

Here's a link to the barrel in question:

Thanks yall

I'm not familiar with DPMS' offerings for upper parts. I see they use the 6.8 SPC II chamber spec and a 1:11 twist. You're better off with the 6.8 SPC II. The velocity from 16" - 20" barrel length isn't that great. If you're gonna hump that thing around while hunting, look at the 16" Recon profile. If you're mostly at a bench with it... then the added weight of the 20" heavy barrel is less of an issue.

Read through a lot of the stickied threads on the 68forums site before you decide... and, read through the spec pages of the vendors who sponsor that forum, they're plugged in to the most up to date specs/features.

Thanks. The added weight really isn't an issue for me. I know that I want a barrel with the SPC II chamber spec so that I can shoot the SSA tactical loads as well and I've read that most people like a 1:11 twist.

I agree with Ratdog. I you are going to carry that Hbar around, you are going to hate it. I you are going to sit at a bench or in a deer stand with a short walk to it, it will be all right. I have an 18" White Oak Arms that was sold through Global Tactical, and it is pretty good. If I had to do it again, I would probaly buy the 16" recon from AR Performance.

I may just hold out and buy a complete upper from AR Performance. The particular model that I was looking at is the Basic Upper from them.

That is probably a good idea. I spoke with them awhile back and they seem like good people. There are more choices now than when I assembled mine. Just do your research and you should be happy.

The one I just finished building was with an AR Performance upper I had Harrison build for me. I got the 16" recon, mid gas, YHM Diamond FF, ITS Superbolt, Tac Latch, Kobel single rail GB. It's the even better 6.8 x 43 chambering. It'll handle any of the 6.8 loads. Harrison and Donna are great folks to deal with too.

Camoman, I have a DPMS in the 6.8 SPC with a twenty inch barrel. Its very accurate and I have taken five deer with it . From ranges of 80 yards to 275 yards. But I will say this the rifle is heavy . From the factory it weighs nine pounds . Mine use to weigh 11 pounds with a 3x 10 scope & loaded mag. This past hunting season , I wanted to make some improvements. First I added a collapsible stock , removed the scope and add an Adams Arms gas piston. The rifle without the scope weighs less than eight pounds.I'm deciding now should I go with a trijicon 1x4 or Acog. Both weigh the same and would keep the rifle weight down to 9 pounds.I use this rifle for hunting .

Ugh decisions decisions lol. If I was to build it, I already have an upper with a bull barrel in 5.56 that I could swap the barrels out on and save money but then I would have to buy an upper reciever vice block and an armorers tool. I know that I can get a complete 6.8 SPC bolt carrier assembly for around $130. I'll have to check and see which way I would come out ahead on. Thanks for the info guys.

You'd also have to swap the bolt if you went the parts swap route.
