I did a poll like this awhile back and I ended up going with a Sig 226 .40. As a long time Sig fan, I was never concerned about buying a Sig, until I actually received my 226 back in May. Not to get into a Sig bashing post, but Sig Sauer isn not what it used to be, I was extremely dissapointed in the fit, quality and function of my Sig 226. I have an older 226 that is completely a different gun than my new duty one. I also did not shoot where I should have in terms of my ability, I shot much better with XDs and Glocks. I really believe the hype in various posts about the many gun boards about Sigs quality control being rather poor. Enough ranting.

I am torn between a Glock 22 and an XD 40 ( XDM is CANNOT BE CONSIDERED IN THIS THREAD, AS IT IS NOT AN APPROVED WEAPON).

I shoot both rather well, but I was would like as always some high roader input. I could get the rough frame Glock, as that is approved for my department.

Pros , cons, reviews welcome.

HAS TO BE .40 GLOCK 22 OR XD .40 SERVICE.

Does it have to be a 40? If so can it be a Glock 23? But for now I vote Glock 22.

40 Slow and Weak... Il take niether in that overhyped caliber, unless of course you dont have a choice.

If thats the case, the XD guys at work swear by them, and the Glock guys, like me, swear by the Glock. I dont think you can go wrong with either it really becomes a matter of taste. Glock's have a lot more history and started the polymer revolution, if that means anything to you.

Sorry about the opening line, but seriously I carried a 10mm (G20) when I was hired in the early 90's and Ive always shook my head in disbelief at the facination w/ the 40 short and wimpy

I think both are good guns, but I'm partial to the Glock. I agree the 40 isn't my fav. load but if it's all you can choose from I guess you have to make do.

I voted Glock. I carry a G22 as my duty weapon and I dont have a single complaint. The XD is an excellent weapon as well but I dont care for the higher bore line. I hope they upgraded the finish though. I had a XD-9 when they first came out when it was still the Croatian gun, and the finish wore off really quickly.

Also the support for a Glock is incredible. The only thing bad about a Glock are the stock sites. But I swapped mine out for Heine's (spelling) while in the academy before I actually ever shot the thing.

Impossible to answer.

The answer is this: which gun do you shoot better?

BOTH guns are quality. BOTH guns will perform adequately. ONE of them will perform better in your hands. ONLY YOU can figure out which one that is.

You've shot both. Pick one. See this?
I also did not shoot where I should have in terms of my ability, I shot much better with XDs and Glocks.
The same thing can happen between the XD and the Glock, though the difference may be more subtle. Go out, spend some time getting all married up to the two guns, and you'll see which one works better for you.

Why not Smith and Wesson's M&P?
Read the OP. He's looking for a duty pistol off of an approved list. M&P is not on the list, apparently.

Thanks for all of the replies. I was wondering what the general opinion is about the RTF (ROUGH TEXTURE FRAME) glock 22 .

i've found that a major factor between the two is the feel of the Glock grip angle as opposed to the XD grip angle (more vertical)

i don't have much experience with either gun in .40 (is there a recurring theme here?) but have shot the 9mm versions extensively. i shoot both the Glock 19 and the XD well enough for duty use (my choice for duty was the Sig 220...friendlier department).

i found that the XD feels better in my hand, but that the GLock 19 seemed to point better.

i was able to handle a XD with a thumb safety at the SHOT show and it was very comfortable

I own a XD in .45 and I prefer the grip angle of the XD to that of the Glock. It has a very natural point with lightning fast sight allignment. I have also shot the Glock 22 and the grip angle takes soom getting used to but both are very fine shooters. I have not had a malfunction with either. It basically comes down to what you are comfortable with. Hope this helps you make your decision

Actually the SW M&P is approved for my department, I do not care for it (although it does feel good in the hand) and out of all of the guns that ran through our academy class, the SW M&P had a lot of problems. So I am only interested in XD or Glock.

I voted for the XD. I have a Sub-Compact in 9mm and love it. No probs whatsoever. For me, it came down to the grip angle

Question is, are you into buying one or this is a choices you get from your armory?

If you into buying yourself one - Go for a Glock, widely available parts and accessories at low cost.

Question:

Does the Glock have a safety of any type?

Nuff said.

Luke
Actually it has several internal safeties. If you're talking about a thumb type safety, thats not really needed with proper training. No more likely to ND than with a Sig or a DA revolver. As far as weapon retention, thats what a good holster is for. You try and take my pistol out of my holster you're gonna have a hard time if you dont know how, especially with me punching, kicking, stabbing and biting you.

Hmmm? I am continually surprised by the .40 cal haters out there. Granted, it doesn't have the power of 10mm but it is far more controllable, especially for novice shooters. I say novice because even after 26 years on the job, I regularly see people come to the range who absolutely HATE shooting. They are minimal shooters at best and some of them have difficulty qualifying with the Glock 22. It's not good but "that's the way it is". Also, the 10mm round puts much more stress on the weapon. Multiply that by 200x3 and you're looking at higher potential repair/peplacement costs. I am not the biggest fan of Glocks but they are very basic in design (i.e. easy for the above mentioned nimrods to clean and maintain) and I've grown to be a big fan of the .40 cal round. It packs a very respectable punch, really good SD ammo is easy to find while being reasonably priced and terminal ballistic properties against potential threats is very impressive. The XD line is also very nice IMO. They are reasonably priced and well made. That's my $.02!

i feel Springfield makes better guns then Glock, and they are more accurate then a Glock, so if the springfield would break it wold be fixed for free cuz they have Lifetime Warranty -Glocks do not. also the XD has better less felt recoil for a better follow up shot if more then one shot is needed.

I have owned both, carried glock on duty for a long time...actually went to a sig after that but you are right the newer sigs aren't what the older ones are, compared my newer 226 that I had for duty carry to my older 229 and it is night and day difference. I always liked the glocks I carried, owned a XD 5 inch .40 for a while the first one was junk and Springfield replaced the gun under warranty after it was sent back twice for FTF/FTE issues, replacement XD was great. I guess I just had a lemon. Get whichever one feels better and shoots better FOR YOU. Springfield absolutely stood behind their product and made it right though, great service especially when they know its a law enforcement officer's weapon.

I played with a new rough texture glock 22 at Buds the other day...same exact gun as any other 22 except for the texture on the grip and the cocking serrations are curved...the grip texture is very very very sharp, kind of like having the most extreme skate board tape ever invented wrapped around it. I can't really see there being any chance of it slipping out of your hand, but I can't really see a regular glock slipping out of your hand either. If you find one to handle you might like it, personally I could take it or leave it, its hardly a great breakthrough in modern day weapons technology or anything. After some more thought on it I am casting my vote for the glock for one reason and ONE reason only...the availability of duty holsters for the XD is more limited compared to the Glock...on that note I will cast my vote for a Safariland rapter holster in level two retention, unless of course you are required to have level 3 retention...I used the Level 2 Raptor for years and there is no freakin' way anybody but the person wearing the holster is ever going to get that weapon out of the holster, tried it, tested it with buddies trying to wrestle a blue gun out of it...no way that thing is coming out unless you want it to, and the draw is very fast and natural!!!

:) I'll vote for the Glock Model 22. (Just as long as you don't have to install a tac light onto the frame.)

As for the RTF Glocks, the people I know who own them all seem to like them. Various body fluids can make any pistol suddenly and unusually slippery. The RTF Glocks are designed to counteract slipping. After you hold one for awhile you won't even notice the finish's sharp surface. (Back in the 70's I can remember paying custom gunsmiths, 'big money' in order to get the front and backstraps stippled this way on my combat pistols!) Helps to keep the gun from moving around in your hand while rapid firing too.

All these things being said, I'm not a 40 S&W fan. Much prefer 45 acp because it's easier for me to control during rapid fire events. ;)
