I vaguely recollect someone saying that using a Egg foam mattress pad in a gun case would cause rust. Yes, I did do a search of THR and no info.

Dose anyone have any experience with this?

Yes.

My Dad's shotgun had some rust on it due to being stored in the Egg Crate style foam. Apparently the form will trap moisture and hold it against the metal promoting rust.

What are you doing with the case? Eggshell cases are fine for travel, but you really shouldn't store guns in any type of closed case as the case may trap moisture and cause rust (of course, that being said, my dad has kept his Browning Auto-5 in a cheap soft case in his bedroom closet for decades with no rust). Guns should be stored in a cabinet of some type so air can circulate around them.

A few silica gell packets in the case might help every so often set the silica in the oven and let it dry out from the pilot light.

Coat your gun in a high quality rust-preventive oil and you should be fine. I use Beeman MP-5 oil (the airgun company), as it dries without leaving a greasy feel and offers excellent rust protection.

I bought a case like this for my Remington 700 and the bolt handle started to rust a little it and so did the scope rings. I then bought a Plano AirGlide rifle case and have not had a problem since. It sits the gun up and down insted of on its side and the foam doesnt touch the metal very much. The gun is helo down by two straps. I took a few silica packets from work and threw them in a drying oven by my work station for a few days over the weekend to make sure they were dry and then threw them in the case.

The bad news about this case is 1) it is cumbersome. It takes up more room than needed. 2) It is hard to find! Dont try looking around at academy or gander mtn because it is not there. I ordered it only from TR Outdoors.

The good news is there it actually quite a bit of space in there that you can throw in some ammo. I usually put in some ammo, matches, ear plugs, gun oil, various other things.

+5 on the bore stores no rust and no scratches

first borestore then into hard shell gun case

Thanks guys.

It's a homemade case, made out of wood. I actually have a Air Glide and like it but no room for one for each gun. I'm going to look up Bore Stores, are you suggesting that I use them in addition to the foam or in place of?

Probably the best place to store a gun, as far as rust is concerned, is the sock drawer but it's also the least secure. About 35 years ago, my grand-paw got my grand-maw a new charter arms .22 revolver. It was kept in a sock drawer and never shot and today it's in presteen condition.
