I want to use my 3" Colt King Cobra as my carry gun. Standard holster on a gun belt does not work for me. I got a bellyband holster, the gun fits and is fairly well concealed at around 1:30 where I wanted it, but my skirt keeps riding up and the result would be I would likely be dead before I could draw it. Shoulder rig will not work on my anatomy. I don't like the idea of a gun purse because it could be taken away from me. I have concluded that what is now called a "waist pack" (formerly "fanny pack") would be my best bet. I know they are ugly, but honestly it will fit right in with my gray hair in a bun, compression stockings and crocs. I want one with a separate compartment for the gun with preferably a built-in holster (or if not, please also recommend suitable holsters to put in it), and another compartment for stuff that would otherwise go in a small purse. Anyone here have a recommendation for specific brand and/or model ?

I don't have a recommendation but I've got to say it puts a smile on my face thinking of crocs & fanny pack sweet lady packing a snake gun . God bless you, we need more like you.

Thank you, your comment put an equal smile on my face. :)

I like to think my appearance is a tactical advantage, what BG would expect somebody who looks like me to shoot back?

I know they make them, but I'm not familiar with any gun specific fanny packs.

This is different, but a similar concept, the Wilderness Tactical "Safepacker" https://www.thewilderness.com/safep...-96690326&mc_cid=532501f5ad&mc_eid=46e1b47366
Thanks very much.

On their website I was able to see all the different sizes. The one big enough for my gun (I now realize that a revolver with an x-inch barrel is considerably longer overall than a semi-auto with the same size barrel, due to the different shape) is humongous, because it holds the gun vertically. To my eye that doesn't look anything like a typically dotty-old-lady fanny pack, so I wouldn't feel like nobody would get the idea that I was carrying. For someone using a small semi-automatic they look very nice!

That's completely understandable.

There is this from Hill People Gear https://www.hillpeoplegear.com/Products/CategoryID/1/ProductID/129

or MaxPedition https://www.maxpedition.com/products/octa-versipack?variant=27895805393

They may be too tactical or possibly not big enough for a big revolver, but I'm just not that familiar with the category of product to be much help. I've got to believe there are some not tactical looking fanny packs that should work, but I just don't know what they are.

I've got a few different sizes of Safepackers. My first was for a G23/P229 which is the 'Commander' size. A 3" GP100 fit into it okay, though I can't remember what grips I was using at the time.

How tall is your gun? It might fit something smaller than the bigger sizes designed for large revolvers.

The Hill People Gear one says it fits a Glock 19 but is better for a subcompact. A Glock 19 has a 4" barrel and overall length of 7.36"; the King Cobra has a 3" barrel and overall length of 8 3/8". So that one's off the table.

I went to the MaxPedition site, a chat bot popped up and gave me two links for ones that would supposedly fit, but the reported dimensions are kinda squirrely (conflict with each other).

Thanks very much for trying. :)

5 1/8". AFAICS the length is more of an issue than the height. If it matters, I have the factory grips on it. You can see a photo on the Cabela's website, Colt website has something wrong with it.

I've found that once the item breaks in a little, you can get a slightly bigger gun in it than they recommend. I'll try and remember to take a look at the 'Commander' when I get home. But I think your gun might fit it okay.

5.11 Tactical used to make (and perhaps still does) a small fanny pack, but it might be just a little too small. Unless they made more than one size.

Tuff Products made/makes one that would work, but it's bulky and uncomfortable so might be a bit much.

Mountain Smith makes comfortable fanny packs that could, with some modification, accept a holster.

Well, my wife has the 3" GP100 somewhere, but I got some pics with a 4.2" version that has a Hogue grip on it. Looks like the overall length is about 9.5" on this gun. Height is around 5.75".

The Safepacker is blue, the 5.11 is black and tan, and the Tuff Products is coyote brown.

These are all setup left handed. The Safepacker and Tuff Products have to be ordered either right or left. The 5.11 can be used either way.

So you'll notice that the length of the grip prohibits the gun fitting into the 5.11. I don't think your gun will have that issue as it's not as tall. And also a shorter barrel will allow the grip towards the center of the pack.

I know I've used the Safepacker with the 3" GP100, but it had a different grip on it than the one shown on this 4.2". I know that grip made the gun's height shorter, and allowed me to cant the gun just slightly in the Safepacker, and then it fit well.

So the Safepacker 'Commander' size may be touch and go. It's up to you if you want to risk it. It also may or may not have a carry option that you like. But from the dimensions I've found for the King Cobra, if it were me, I'd bet on it fitting.

  • Barrel Length: 3 inch.
  • Overall Length: 8.2 inch.
  • Overall Height: 4.9 inch.
  • Overall Width: 1.4 inch.
  • Grip: Hogue Overmold.

I experimented with a good many fanny pack holsters and finally settled on the Blackhawk Urban Carry.
This was also known as the "5-5-10" for the ability to draw the gun and fire five shots in five seconds onto a target at 10 feet.
It's FAST.

The quality is much higher then most others.

It uses zippers instead of Velcro so there's no chance of the gun working it's way out.

Because it uses zippers there's no loud RIIIPPPP sound as you open it. This allows "sneaking" your hand into the pack if things look chancy, and it they turn out to be a false alarm you can just as quietly take your hand out and no one will notice you were ready to go.

There's two loops on the back so if you want you can attach it to your belt for added security from a grab attempt.

The back has "molded" padding to make it more comfortable.

It has a rip cord to open it for right or left hand. I would add a knob to the rip cord to make it easier to "find" the cord in an emergency.

It has two elastic magazine holders on the front of the gun pocket.

It comes with a Velcro strap arrangement to secure the gun in place so it won't shift around.
The back of the pocket is covered with Velcro so you can use an actual holster for even better positioning.

The high grade rounded buckle has a security feature so it requires pressing in three places to unlock. This makes a grab attempt harder. If you don't like the third security feature you can simply cut it off with a hobby knife and use the usual two locking tabs.

It comes in three sizes so you can get one to fit most any CCW gun.
These are more expensive but they're well worth it both from the durability, the security, and the speed of draw.

Due to the quality it lasts a LONG time. I've been using these daily for almost 25 years and I'm just working on my third one.

Wow, thank you! :)

What are the actual dimensions of the gun compartment on the 5.11 one?

This one looks large enough.

Don't see any fanny packs on their website. ???
Maybe they stopped making them..............The one I have is blue (so it might scream TOURIST, bit not GUN) with ambi quick release for RH or LH use. I could fit a G26 plus spare mag in the main compartment plus the outer two pockets could hold a variety of things from phone, keys or more mags. They did make them in different sizes depending on gun size. If they stopped, maybe EBAY?

Good luck in your quest

I don't see a Fanny Pack on their website, but Coronado Leather makes a lot of concealment handbags for women. Depending on how much you want to spend, they may be able to make a Fanny Pack for you.

Wow, thanks for finding that! That one does look large enough on the above photo. No reviews on their website, went googling, a guy on Amazon said he doesn't know how they can say it fits a large revolver, it does not fit a 3" 686. I have a 4" 686 which for me is anyway too big for a carry gun, but if I had left the factory grips on it it would be the same size as my Colt except for the barrel length, and even with the Hogue grooveless I put on the Smith the back part is only a teensy bit bigger.

I noticed reviews saying they had to be very careful where the rear sight is positioned inside the pouch to avoid getting snagged on the zipper... ? And the Colt has a hammer besides the rear sight... Which makes me nervous... ???

That's definitely something to consider. You won't know until you try it. Most of us have a drawer, tote, or some other container, full of holsters that didn't quite work out for one reason or another.

Fortunately, something like a fanny pack or Safepacker can always be used with some other gun, later on down the road. So they're not always a waste of money. I use mine on and off for atypical carry situations. Canoeing; road trips; non-technical climbing; snowshoeing in deep powder, etc. And as I have a few options in various sizes, there's usually something that will work with the gun I choose.
