The New York City Public Library, probably the biggest library in the country, claims that it does not keep records of what people read. My local library also had a notice posted that it does not keep records.

I dont buy this for a second. If they dont keep records of what you check out how do they get their books back? How is it that when I return a book they know wether or not I owe late fees? I assure you that even if they have some magical system that allows them to do this, there *are* records of interlibrary loans because they really do have to get those books back to the loaning library AND they have to know who to get into contact with when the book arrives.

Many of them were in fact communists, and the VENONA files later exonerated McCarthy. What we need today is a new HUAC, to investigate the links between modern liberalism and islamofascism; both America hating subversives IMO.

From the link you posted: "Many of the people McCarthy accused of communist party membership were NOT later identified in VENONA as being Soviet espionage agents."
Exonerated, how?

So we need another HUAC, a more authoritarian govt. in the US?
Why do you hate freedom? What are you, French?:evil: :neener: :eek:

The Venona files show that even a blind pig finds an acorn every now and again.

One must excercise a degree of care to keep McCarthy separate from HUAC as McCarthy suffers needlessly otherwise.

One must excercise a degree of care in believing what Coulter says about McCarthy and Venona as McCarthy benefits undeservedly otherwise.

I understand a new book is coming out, "Photos and Home Addresses of FBI Agents" .............
Yes! That's what I want to see published, along with BATFE Agents, with a yearly update edition. Let them think about how much they will have to sweat it out should they ever decide to come a calling for our guns.

Now I'm no college grad.,but a SS# for a library
book?
If you give out that kind of info for a book,you deserve
to be investigated!:eek:

QuickDraw

This is common in the University system. Up untill very recently universities used your SSN as your student ID number. This is no longer legal in Washington state at least (it might be nationally banned as well) but if he has been a student for awhile its possible that he is still using that number as his ID.

Mad Chemist:From the link you posted: "Many of the people McCarthy accused of communist party membership were NOT later identified in VENONA as being Soviet espionage agents."
The link gave the following list of Soviet agents:

VENONA supports the view that some of the individuals accused by McCarthy were indeed Soviet agents. These are several prominent examples:

Mary Jane Keeney, a United Nations employee, and her husband Philip, who worked in the Office of Strategic Services;
Lauchlin Currie, a special assistant to President Roosevelt;
Virginius Frank Coe, Director of Division of Monetary Research, U.S. Treasury; Technical Secretary at the Bretton Woods Conference; International Monetary Fund
William Ludwig Ullman, delegate to the United Nations Charter Conference and Bretton Woods Conference;
Nathan Gregory Silvermaster, Chief Planning Technician, Procurement Division, U.S. Treasury and head of the Silvermaster network of spies;
Harold Glasser, U.S. Treasury Representative to the Allied High Commission in Italy;
Four staff members of the LaFollette Civil Liberties Committee, a Senate subcommittee on labor rights chaired by Senator Robert La Follette, Jr., whom McCarthy defeated for election in 1946;
Allan Rosenberg, Chief of the Economic Institution Staff, Foreign Economic Administration; Counsel to the National Labor Relations Board; argued cases before the United States Supreme Court.
Cedric Belfrage journalist; British Security Coordination

Mad Chemist:So we need another HUAC, a more authoritarian govt. in the US?

No, actually I'm a Californian :neener: Yes, I think the America haters and their subversive fellow travelers, whether they be in the U.S. Congress, the MSM, or the ACLU should be rounded up and incarcerated until further notice. That's only my opinion and you do have the freedom to disagree. :p

Posts:
#42--Overseas Library Program
#45--links at the end of my post
#48--a direct example (I haven't fact checked and cross-referenced it yet)

Hawk's post(#54)helps to keep this in context.

You should use the links and look up some of your own.

Slow down a second. He meant they don't keep records after the book is returned. My old library was like that, because I specifically asked them about it . They could show a list of what I currently had checked out, but their computer didn't show a list of all the books I had checked out and returned. Once it was returned, it wasn't in my record anymore.

I already have a copy that I bought years ago. I wanted to read it to see what he had to say.

It was so boreing and rambling I couldn't get much past page 10 so I stoped reading it.

I tried to read it in college as well. Then I thought it would be better/more fun to read it in the original German. That didn't help. Actually the German in the book was so much different than the German I was trying to learn that it didn't take long to get me to quit!

Why is it someone would be visited for requesting that book, yet at many gun show book stands, I see stuff far more subversive being sold openly.
I tend to also think this story is made up.

I still think it has more to do with his international travel and specific version of the book he requested - most likely an original Chinese version.

re: McCarthy: I googled up some info. Here's what one site out of many had to say...

'Joe McCarthy Was Right'

From www.spongobongo.com/em/em9820.htm

"Just how many did McCarthy catch? Darn few. Of the 10,000 government employees who were exposed as Communists, security risks, or of questionable loyalty and lost their jobs, at the least, only forty can be attributed to McCarthy.
Any of the major players? None, as most had either been moved laterally by Truman or snared by the FBI.
Most of the forty were small time functionaries such as Owen Lattimore, John Stewart Service, Philip and Mary Jane Keeney, and Howard Shapley; and these were the most prominent."

How reliable is the source who published the story are they known for journalistic integrity???

I doubt very much this story is true, there just aint enough FBI agents for them to be bothered with personally checking out everyone who takes out a copy of a communist book.

Now if it were a rare translation of the Koran which concentrated on violent Jihad, or a book on making chemical weapons.............

The story says it knows the students name but is withholding it at his request.

I would expect that his parents also vouched for the visit.

This does not surprise me at all. A good friend I went to college with who is now in the Justice dept, says one thing computers have done is Dumb down investigative services. He says it is too easy to just set a search engine to look for 'hits' instead of using skillfull techniques to actually look at trends and intentions and build a profile out of that. Too many people have decided that computer searches are infallible and the most effiecient way to develop leads in an investigation.

Now I do not understand the 'official "peking" version' part, that is far more troublesome to me as no Professor or student has used Peking as the term for Beijing for some time. I would particularly think a grad student in Massachusetts would know the difference.

In College we were required to read the little red book, Das Kapital, Mien Kampf, and several other subversive books as part of Political science 101.

Amazing to me the lengths of "Chicken Little" screaming the liberal left will resort to over their abject horror about the Patriot Act... The sky is not falling... they should be reminded of that daily!

their abject horror about the Patriot Act... The sky is not falling... they should be reminded of that daily!

The same was said about GCA 68

Look at all of the horrific abuses that came from that "common sense" legislation that so many supported because it was for our protection.

It's starting to look like this is from the "false-but-accurate" department.

The bottom line here is that the correct reply to any such claim is a derisive "yeah, and I'm the Queen of Sheeba." The fact that we can't just dismiss it out of hand, that we even need to mount a defence for the FBI/Secret Service/etc., is just another example of how Very Wrong things are.

McCarthy did not target JUST government officials. McCarthy was on a witch hunt and would accuse anyone of being a communist without proof. There is a reason why he died an alocholic.

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/database/mccarthyism.html

Among those who were not government officials:

David Bohm, Physicist
Charlie Chaplin, Actor
Aaron Copland, Composer of modern tonal music
Dashiell Hammett, Author
Lillian Hellman, Playwright and left-wing activist
Arthur Miller, Playwright and essayist
Paul Robeson, Actor, athlete, singer, writer, political and civil rights activist, and winner of Stalin Peace Prize
Waldo Salt, writer, government employee & CPUSA member.
Paul Sweezy, economist and founder-editor of Monthly Review
John Garfield, Actor
Elia Kazan, film and theatre director and producer, Committee Witness
John Hubley, animator

McCarthy did not target JUST government officials.

Let's start at the top....

David Bohm, Physicist - May 1949 - HOUSE Un-American Activities Committee

Charlie Chaplin, Actor - September 1947 - HOUSE Un-American Activities Committee

Aaron Copland, Composer of modern tonal music - Employed to give US embassy-sponsored lectures on music in Latin America and Italy (government employee)

Etc.etc.etc.etc.

oh those poor hollywood elites who had to go without Cristal while they were blacklisted! ohh the horror!

meanwhile, on the other side of the world, millions of civilians died at the hands of the communist dictators that the hollywood elites were openly sympathizers and supporters of.
