Does anyone have any experience with Federal Tactical HST 45 +P 230grs? Since I can't find my usual SD round in stock, I was thinking of trying either these or the Double Tap 230g.

Good question! On paper these two choices look like they could be two of the most effective 45acp rounds on the market. When making my personal selection of a SD round my number two concern was muzzle flash. Because DoubleTap is archiving some amazing velocities out of a non +P loading I'm guessing that they must be using a somewhat slow burning powder. I have no way of knowing for sure, that's just my guess. I'd love to hear from DoubleTap and see some test photos comparing the two but I've never been able to get them to respond to any voicemails or email queries about their products.

In the end I went with the +P version of the HST for my full sized .45s. The performance of the two is close enough and the non +P version of the HST is known for excellent expansion and minimal muzzle flash. See pages 60-63 in the November/December '07 American Handgunner.

HST Performance.

I have the 147 grain HSTs in my 9mm, and 200 rounds of (non +p) 230 grain HSTs in the safe for the .45. Once they test well in my Sig 1911, that’s what I’ll be carrying.

I have them, bought a case run great in my Charles daly and SA 1911A1GI,nice and accurate. They buck a little, but if you follow the test link in the earlier post,I'd much rather be on the recoil end of them.

I bought a box a month ago from Streichers, out of 15 shots i had 11 ftf's resulting in frame-ramp damage(aluminum frame), so now i have to buy a ramped barrel and pay a gunsmith to mill the frame for it. also there were 2 FAILURES TO FIRE due to bad primers with my kimber tcII, a friend also had failures to fire with his para LDA

It sounds like somehow you got the worlds worst box of duds. Somehow I suspect it's not typical.

It was just a bad batch of primers, i already informed streichers to look out for boxes near the serial number on my box

tkkr,

You can also get a 'smith' to place a steel insert in the feed ramp. Geo Smith of EGW and Chuck Rogers of Rogers Precision can do the work.

Rogers did one of mine. Colt had miscut the feed ramp angle. and it did not reliabily feed the top round from slide lock or slingshot.

Some JHPs do not play nice with aluminum feed ramps. The old Hydra Shock and the newer Ranger have, so far, worked well in my Commanders. The Ranger is a plus p round and I do have no knowledge about longetivity in aluminum frames.

If it eventually cracks a frame, I'll just get another Commander.

salty.

The Federal HST is my primary choice for all my duty/carry guns!
I would love to see Federal produce the HST in 357Sig!!

Im gona try to get an infinity(schuemann.com) AET ramped barrel put into it, since the cost of milling the frame for a clark cut is only 50$ by a couple gunsmiths
