FFL's And The Purchase Of Firearms From Individuals

Greeting's All-

How does your FFL handle purchases of firearms from an individaul? Once a
firearm is logged into the offical records, does your FFL check with the local
PD or Sheriff to verify that the firearm in question wasn't stolen. I know we
buy guns all the time from individuals, and record their government issued
ID number; such as drivers license, non-drivers ID, or military ID, but that
is 'bout it. Its quite possible for a firearm to be traded in by an individual,
and 10 minutes later be resold over the counter with a 4473. Too me, this
does not allow time for a through check to see if said firearm is on any
departmental "HOT SHEET". What is your opinion, please?

BTW, I would hate too know I had bought someone's stolen firearm; cuz
if they would steal from them, well they would steal from me to~!

Just remember, a gun not being on the "hot sheet" doesn't mean it's not stolen. A lot of guns belong to people that have no idea what the make, model or serial # are so if they are stolen there's nothing to go on the "hot sheet".

You are absolutely correct Don, as some persons have NO clue and don't keep
written records. Muchless, the bill of sale on their firearms.

Texas Dealers have no way to check to see if a firearms is stolen or not. There is no national database a Dealer can check. I wish there was. Dealers should have access to this information. We record the information from whoever we buy it from. Yes, it may be stolen, but we can identify who we bought it from. This protects you the buyer, if you are caught with a stolen firearm you purchased from a dealer, once verified, you are off the hook. The dealer is off the hook, woe on the person who sold it to the dealer.

Alabama doesn't have access to that kind'a information either, Terry. We do
ID the seller, and keep the picture ID (mugshot, if you will?) in our files.

No, it sounds like a stolen firearm data base. Which, by the way, already exist. I would like access to it.
