And I had a blast. This was the first time I have been able to shoot a pistol larger than .22 in about 6 years. I finally had a chance to fire some of the handguns I've been considering for concealed carry, Springfield XD-9 Sub-compact, Walther P99, Sig 228, and a Glock 19. Here are just some impressions I had after firing a few mag fulls through each:

XD-9: I was surprised at how well this gun shot. I was expecting it to recoil quite a bit more due to it's short stature, but it was very controllable. The trigger felt nice as well. The gun shot to the right for me, but I think that may have been my problem. This gun came in third as far as accuracy obtained yesterday, but it was also the first pistol I chose to shoot. I think I could have done a lot better with more ammo.

P-99: This was the second pistol I shot. The trigger took a little getting used to. In fact, the friend I went with called me over because he had pulled the trigger twice, and just heard a click both times. Turns out he hadn't pulled it all the way. I was more accurate with the Walther than I was with the XD. I did notice however, that the Walther seemed to have significantly more muzzle flip for me. It didn't seem to affect my shooting too much as long as I did my part.

Glock 19: I have to say this was my least favorite gun of the day. I really did not like the trigger at all, and the grip didn't fit me as well as the other two. I really wanted to like this one, but it just didn't feel right for me. Also, the Glock mag was the hardest one out of all them to load. The other three actually seemed to get a little easier to load around the 6th or 7th round.

Sig 228: The Sig was a DAO, however, I didn't feel like I was hampered by the trigger pull. It felt very light and smooth. Also, the Sig was very comfortable in the hand. I turned in my best group of the day with this one, right around 3.5" at 15 yards. I'm sure that could be bettered with practice though. The Sig seemed to have less muzzle flip than the others, the gun would rise slightly then fall back on target. This may have to do with it weighing a bit more than the others though.

It was certainly a learning experience. I noticed myself flinching several times, even though I knew the recoil wouldn't hurt. There was one occassion where I had run the slide forward on the Glock and then inserted the magazine. When I squeezed the trigger, I noticed myself pushing forward, even though there was just a click rather than a boom. Another thing I noticed was that I seemed to be more accurate with the P-99 and Sig 228 when I fired them one-handed. Go figure. Either way, it was fun, and I plan on going again soon.

Nice writeup. Throwing some lead downrange is quite addictive.

You seemed to choose a lot of polymer guns for this trip. You might want to look at some others like CZ, Ruger, Beretta, etc. Those guns are going to have a completely different feel than the polymer ones (a feel I prefer immensely).

Heya McNutt,

I actually rented the guns I shot, so I was limited to what they had on hand. I think this range caters more to people that bring their own handguns, so they didn't have a very big selection. They did have a few .40's and a couple of the brand new Para .45's for rent though, so I might give them a shot next time. I would have loved to had the chance to try a Beretta or a CZ.

And you're right about it being addictive, after we had left I was ready to go back again:D

My local range doesn't make you pay until you leave. They have this evil tab system set up. I used to always go there and they'd say "That'll be $65" whenever I went to settle up. Now I know better and bring everything I need and only have to worry about that range fee.

Always buy your targets and ammo somewhere else. :)

extremefishin00 -

Did you go to Dominion Shooting Range? I haven't been there in a little while, didn't know they rented Sigs there. Seems like they had a load of Glocks and a few S&W's. It serves its purpose as a range, but it gets expensive quick buying their marked up ammo.

This hobby is very addictive...and expensive.

RicVa,

Yep, it was Dominion Shooting Range. They only had the one Sig there from what I saw..most of what they had were Glocks and S&W's. It was a bit expensive, but the guys behind the counter were pretty helpful, so I felt it was worth it. If you have any suggestions for any other ranges in the area I'd appreciate it.

I recently joined Black Creek Shooters Association, which is in Mechanicsville. They don't have any full memberships left for this year, but they do have some Mon-Fri memberships left. They have four ranges where you can shoot everything from 7 yard pistol to 100 yard rifle. You can also shoot trap there. At $75 for the year, it's a great deal. I think the M-F membership is only about $65. You can shoot your own ammo too.
