First off let me say that I know that free legal advise is worth exactly what I pay for it.

That said, I have applied for my Florida non-resident CCW and should be getting it shortly. I did this for two reasons. First is because I live 15minutes form the PA border and spend a lot of time in PA. Second, I vacation in FL and VT, two other states that honor the FL non-res.

My question is: Say I am going to VT. Can Put my carry piece in my trunk and then as soon as I hit the VT border pull over and throw it into my holster?

Also, for anyone who has one, is there anything that I should know that I might not have thought of?

Thanks for the assistance,

Fred

Hey DB. Double check the PA thing. There was recently some hub-bub about PA not honoring the FL.

For VT, as you know, you do not need a permit. The trick is getting through NY to get there.

Supposedly, if you are legal in NJ, and legal in VT, Federal law permits you to travel. (Safe passage) However, it seems that NY does not recognize this and would likely give you a hard time if it were found.

What I would do is travel through NY like you have to in NJ. Gun unloaded, locked in a container (toolbox or something) separate from any ammo. Neither gun or ammo in the passenger area, and make as few stops as possible. Once in VT, you're good to go.

You might as well get your NH permit if you go over there! You can get it now w/ the FL and its like $20 and it took me a week to get it back!

I don't see anything wrong with that. That's the same thing I plan to do as I have family in Florida. Just make sure the gun is unloaded and the ammo stored in a seperate compartment.

Did you request the paperwork for the permit online? I requested it online and it's been almost a month and I haven't gotten anything from Florida. I know it can take a while for processing the application, but how long should it take to get the app?

No,

I went to a class. It was about 4 hours (I think) and then they did the forms and fingerprinting right there. The guy that ran the class said that it usually took about 4-6 weeks to get it back. So I guess that we will see.

I'll look into that, but I took the class in PA, and I hope that they would say something if I wouldn't be able to CCW in PA. I'll look in to it and let you guys know.

I live in NYC, took the Florida CCW class in PA. The class instructor supplied all the necessary paperwork and finger prints. Mailed everything to FL and received my license in 67 days mailbox to mailbox. This was at the beginning of this year and the instructor did say that we could carry in PA with the FL license.

Pennsylvania does not recognize the Florida non-resident carry permit

I can't verify, but these look accurate:

It has recently come to our attention that the Pennsylvania Attorney General's office and the Pennsylvania State Police have recently ruled, despite the carry license reciprocity agreement between Pennsylvania and Florida, to NOT recognize as valid in Pennsylvania the Non-Resident Florida Carry Permit. However, the Pennsylvania Attorney General and the Pennsylvania State Police have recently entered into a reciprocity agreement with Virginia. So, if you are NOT a Florida or Pennsylvania resident, and you want to be able to carry legally in Pennsylvania, you should consider obtaining a Non-Resident Virginia Carry Permit in addition to the Non-Resident Florida Permit.

And, for NH:

QUESTION 4. I have a Florida Concealed Weapon/Firearm License, but I am not a legal resident of Florida. Can I travel to the states that recognize Florida licenses and still carry a concealed weapon?

Most of the reciprocity states will honor Florida non-resident permits; however, two states - Michigan and New Hampshire - have indicated that they WILL NOT honor non-resident Florida licenses. Because gun laws are subject to change or different interpretation by state courts, it is recommended that non-resident Florida licensees call or write licensing authorities in the states in which they will be traveling to obtain the latest information.

I don't know how the law is written where you live, but where I live it states that the lic is reciprocal if the party who is displaying the FL permit is in fact a resident of FL.
Several folks obtained a FL permit, with their local address (not FL) on it, a they were advised that it would not be honored here.

i just recieved my fl permit and it came with a list of states that honor the fl permit as well as non resident exceptions.
There are 4 states that do not honor fl non resident permits and the only one i can remember is kansas, as the other 3 were covered by my va permit.
Can't find the list.

Kansas, Michigan, New Hampshire and (now) Colorado won't accept non-resident permits. That does not mean, however, that they might not issue you a non-resident permit of their own. There are also a number of states that don't have reciprosity with Florida, but are pretty good about issuing non-resident permits. There are only about ten states where you are pretty much screwed. Surprisingly, Massachussetts isn't one of them (they'll give a non-resident permit to pretty much anyone who is licensed in their home state, but its only good for a year).

Pennsylvania issues non-resident permits via the various sherriffs. I acquired mine from the Sherriff of Centre County. It was, as I recall, $20 for five years.
I followed a link from the packing.org site, which while fairly dormant now, still has a lot of information and useful links.
I suggest that as a matter of respect for a state that offers a non-resident permit, we all get the respective ones. My wife and I visit Pennsylvania fairly often and I'm happy to support a place that supports the right to carry.
Besides, it's in all of our best interests to get as many carry permits out there as possible, as a way of demonstrating to the rest of the public that the existence of permits is not a problem.

Centre County Sheriff Denny Nau called the AG's office for clarification on the FL permit. Since Fl doesn't distinguish between resident or nonresident and PA has reciprocity with FL, it is honored. I have also talked to the PA AG's office and got the same answer. I carry in PA on my Fl license and I'm from KS. Kansas is quickly going mainstream on our CCW laws, and it is about time. Mike

I completely agree with cherryriver. We should all get as many carry premits as possible. The more carry permits the harder it would be for the anti's to push their agenda.

scurtis_34471, Gov. Ritter has NOT signed SB34 into law. Until he does FL Non-resident permits are honored.

My understanding was the PSP decided on its own they would no longer honor FL non-res permits; after consulting with the PA AG they revised their position.

I would love to get a PA non-res, but unfortunately if your home state issues a permit (even if its may issue and impossible to get, like MD), you must have a permit from your home state to get the PA. So that isn't an option for many.

I think that we should get on our politicians for the following:

1. Every state becoming a "Shall issue" state.

2. National reciprosity.

NOTHING LESS THAN THIS IS ACCEPTABLE!!!

By the way, I live in NY and cannot get a NY carry license. I do have a FL non-resident license.
