If he really wants the C, go for it. The risks aren't great with 9mm at all.

I just purchased the FNP-9.
I have only put 200 rounds through it so far but I'm really impressed with how it shoots. It feels great in my hand and is pretty light to.
The trigger is smooth both in DA/SA
All-in-All I love it and couldn't be happier with it.

Any chance he can shoot them first? That would be the ideal test. The Glock, at least, should be available to rent at most places. I have the glock 23 (same frame as 9mm) and it felt "good" in my hand but absolutely perfect when I started shooting it. I have an FNP (in 45) as well and it feels ok in my hands but I'm not too accurate with it.
I think both a nice weapons but as others here have said, the Glock will give more off-the-shelf options for carry.

I am a huge fan of FN... I have an FNP45 USG. I have shot the FNP9mm. I personally would move him towards the FNX9, it is a huge improvement over the FNP9mm. I have not shot one yet, just researched them. It is smaller, thinner with better controls then the FNP. It is more along the FN45USG line.
That being said... get him the G19. Please know I am not a Glock Fanboy. It actually pains me to admit it, but I personally feel that the G19 is the best CCW firearm made and the best weapon ever designed by Gaston Glock. It carries well. It hides well. It can be optioned out to the users delight, mags are cheap and plentiful, holsters can be found anywhere, it is dead reliable, durable and rust resitant. A proven track record. It is also very accurate and carries a mess of rounds, 15+1. I have one.. I have always tried different carry options, CZ, S&W Semi, WaltherP99, revolvers, XD, SIGs... but most of them are gone now and the G19 just keeps on living in the safe, ready to go. My opinion.

FNP is a good gun to be sure, but the Glock 19 wins hands down when it comes to availability of parts, after market accessories and magazines. The FNP might be more accurate but not so the average shooter could tell.
Try finding a holster for the FNP.
Oh, forget the compensated (19C), there is just no real need and you can burn yourself very badly in some scenarios. Hmmmm, on the other hand, your IDPA times might improve if you were running fast enough to put out the flames of burning clothing. Just trying to visualize how each stage could start. LOL

Afterdoing some research I went with the Glock over the FN, mainly because of the after market barrells and somewhat cheaper mags. I can change from 40 S&W to 357 sig with just a barrel change, you might be able to do it with FN but I couldn't find i out for sure. Replace ment barrels for a glock 27 are around $100, so this was a no brainer for me after a the little research I did.

I've never shot an FNP9, so I can't comment directly on it.
That being said, I don't like DA/SA or DAO in semi-autos. Trigger reach is usually too long for me and the pull tends to be rough and heavy.
I've got a Glock 19 with a 3.5lb. Ghost connector. It's safe and easy to shoot. I also did the "$0.25 trigger job" on it.

I would suggest watching this review. I think this guy does awesome work and I value each and every one of his reviews! They're worth the time, especially when you're investing so much money into this. You won't be sorry you sat through the 40 minutes of talking. Also, he compares the FNP to the G17 (Full size version of G19)

I would also look into the CZ P-01 or PCR models - they're in the same size range, but obviously will weigh a bit more because they're aluminum rather than polymer. I have shot all of these guns and preferred the CZ to the FNP, but LOVED the G19 The CZ will be in the same price range as the other 2 guns you're currently interested in.
Here's what I did the week before turned 21 and went to purchased my first pistol:
I had a friend take me to a range where we payed $100 total for 200 rounds of ammo, our booth (which we shared), targets, and the choice of ANY 9mm handgun they had to rent. This place had TONS of rentals and I got to shoot 15 different 9mm pistols that day... some I would hold and IMMEDIATELY dislike, but others I ended up shooting a couple mags through. Out of all the guns I shot that day my top 3 were the CZ P-01, Glock 19, Sig P229 and the LEAST favored included the XD9 and SR9 - I HATED the grip on these 2 guns!
So if you have the money and a local range that has a large assortment of rental guns go, go check it out and I promise, you won't be disappointed. I think that would be the most effective way to pick the right firearm for your son.
I hope you find the videos by nutnfancy as valuable as I did when I watched them and that between that and actually getting out and shooting many different handguns it helps you make a more informed decision. Good luck. =) and remember to have fun!

I recently purchased a CZ P-01 and have to say, I LOVE IT. It points much more naturally than the Glock does for me and has very little felt recoil; probably the nicest/gentlest 9mm I've ever shot. It is every bit as accurate and reliable as a Glock too. I chose this over the Glock 19/23 because its DA/SA. For concealed carry I think this is perfect; the right combination of safety and readiness.
The FNP-9 isn't really the same size as the Glock 19; I think its too large for concealed carry. I have one on order but after having held one in the shop I intend to use this for instruction at the range, not as a CCW. FN builds handguns for the military and law enforcement: this gun is intended to be a duty gun.
I'd look at either the G19 or the CZ P-01 for CCW. You can't go wrong with either one.

I carry an FNP 40 in a crossbreed holster everyday, all day until I go to bed. It's the same frame as the FNP 9. It is an excellent carry gun. The FN holds a ton of bullets and comes with three stainless mags, replaceable backstrap, loaded chamber indicator, reversible mag release, ambi-decocker, and trigicon nightsights (optional). LOVE THIS GUN!!!
I really like the EMP, but:
It costs twice what one can find a G19 for.
In my experience shooting both models there is no practical difference in terms of accuracy. Both shot ragged fist sized holes COM at 3 7 10 and 15 yards.
A Glock is a perfectly safe carry weapon. I do not find the safety feature of a 1911 to be a draw back but anyone that can safely carry an EMP can safely carry a Glock and the inverse is that if you cannot safely carry a glock you wont be safe with another gun just because it has a grip and thumb safety.
The G19 is one of the best 9mms carry guns out there. I'd be real leery of calling it the best. As whats best for one is not for another. Even if you like what a G19 brings to the table and I do, I would not crown the G19 king until you give the Steyr M9 a try. I would not get the "c" model for a carry gun.
As to the FN. I have been very happy with the FN firearms I've owned and shot. I have not shot (let alone used hard, carried, etc) the FNP-9 so I cannot really comment. It is bigger I believe than the G19. Some people really like DA/SA guns others loath them.
Both are likely to be fine guns so it is more a matter of what things the end user likes in a pistol.
I'd say don't go with the compensated model. It is good for competition, not so much for self defense.
He ought to go with whatever one fits him better. How does he plan to carry it? IWB? If so go with the thinner one. I can personally attest to the awesomeness of the G19, but I hear that the FNP9 is great as well, I've been considering getting one for a while.

I can't argue with that, he has a point. I like carrying my commander sized 1911's, but I'll often just grab my glock and a good IWB holster since I've owned it. I don't care if it gets beat up, scratched, dropped or ravaged by wild animals. It's ugly to start with so damage to the finish will only add character!
Plus, you get a new one between $450 and $550. There seems to be little trouble selling newish used ones for $450-$475. At least you can sell it off without losing hardly any money if you decide that you no longer like it.
I would rather have the FNP. I have plenty of other firearms I can carry if I don't like the FN or it proves to be too big for ccw. I also already have a G19 as a daily beater. If it was for my son, if he stated he wanted a gun for ccw and if it would be his only gun for now...I'd buy him a G19.

The FNP-9 isn't much bigger than the G19, if at all. I've owned an FNP-9M, possibly my favorite pistol ever. The -9M is a hair smaller than the -9, and is either the same size or a half-hair one way or the other compared to the 19/23.
I'll assume your son has training in the judicious use of deadly force and can handle a semi automatic pistol in a combat situation...
Assuming that, my vote would be for the Glock 19 (not compensated). In my way of thinking a compensator on a defensive pistol is a big no no. Also, I would install the NY-1 Trigger module, which will bring the trigger pull up to a consistent 8lbs and is a stronger part than the stock spring. Solid defensive ammo is key, and I'd pick up 1,000 rounds of FMJ 9MM in the same weight for class / practice.
If not, then I would buy him a 357 magnum or 38 revolver and get him enrolled in a quality defensive pistol class, like Masaad Ayoob's LFI I and then LFI II that covers not only the mechanics of shooting but the legal aspects as well.
A 21 year old with a CCW and a semi automatic pistol without the proper training is asking for trouble... Better he have all the tools in his box so he will stay safe and survive...

in a life or death confrontation when you may need to employ deadly force, you will be flooded with adrenaline and a bunch of other good internally produced speed. You'll experience tunnel vision and lose fine motor skills as the brain tells your extremities to send their blood to the torso in preparation for trauma to vital organs.
Practiced to the gills, this is no time to hope you can find the safety IF you even think to disengage it. Draw a Glock and squeeze the trigger. Same pull each and every time. A single operation.
It's reliable and a natural pointer in my opinion. Look for the gun that fits your hand like a piece of warm clay if you want to shoot bullseye. The Glock will fit a staggering range of hand shapes and sizes.
I've never had one fail to anything and it feels good enough. Come to think of it, guns are alot like pizza. Even so-so pizza is still pizza!
But, if Dad's buyin' I'll take a Les B. custom! Happy hunting!

Personally I have never picked up a Glock that felt good in my hand and the one I shot was actually painful to shoot. While my FN felt good from the first, although I bought it only on a whim, since the auction price was unbeatable. Nice ergs, good site, not too big, very accurate, reliable( 500 rds. right out of the box, no problems) and American-made!
About the same size as the 19 and the same as my CZ P0-1, which is an excellent choice if your son wants a metal frame pistol.
