I have a NewVaq 45 colt. Yes, it's my first venture into 45 colt and on those few occassions when I think about it, it would be nice to have the Ruger frame which would take wild 45colt overloads; but *every* time I hoist that puppy I am grateful for the lighter weight. It points something wonderful!

Indeed, I'd like to make some softish loads to explore point-shooting (steel, relatively close).

Yet the large capacity of the 45colt case, with a small dose of fastish powder, means a lot of empty space in the case - maybe problems with consistent ignition.

In 38spl this is situation is overcome with full wadcutters, which seat deep and thereby closer to the powder. (plus, whereas full wadcutters indeed punch a nice round hole, semi wadcutters seem little better than round nose in tearing a ragged hole.)

So, I went looking for full wadcutters in 45colt. Have not found any. Is there a reason for this? Maybe the bullet length required for stable flight would make for an impractically heavy bullet?

Just wondering.

Rather than change your bullet, try changing your powder. Trail Boss is specifically designed to fill the case and makes some sweet .45 Colt loads using 200 or 255 grain bullets.

the 225 gr wadcutter is a smaller version of a saeco 255 gr wc. I cast these myself and use 6-7 grs 231 in my Ruger revolvers.
Saeco makes the block on a custom basis. When I carried a S&W mod 25 I loaded it with 3 silvertips and 3 wadcutters.

Another option I tried this weekend with good results is to use a .45ACP load, like 4.2gr of Clays, under a 200gr LSWC, and seat it very deep, mimicking the case volume of a .45ACP. I seated mine with the tip of the bullet almost flush, maybe 1/32 beyond the case mouth. They shot great.

I would go with Trail Boss or Titegroup powders in the large case. Titegroup was made to be position insensitive and trail boss is so bulky you`ll fill most of your case with it makeing mild loads.

appreciate the suggestions of titegroup and trail boss, but........

worked thru a bottle of titegroup a year or so ago. it is touted as being less sensitive to position in the case. don't recall why, but it left me generally unimpressed. many posters here report it as burning hot, more likely to cause leading problems.

am presently going thru a bottle of trail boss. just put some hornaday 10078 140gr cowboy bullets ahead of trail boss in 38spl cases. pumping air into the mix to make a less dense powder is a marvelous solution to the problem. i hope other manufacturers pick up on it.

but a bottle of trail boss, described as 'one pound' by the store clerk but actually containing 9 oz or 0.5625 lb net, costs about the same as a true pound bottle of any other powder.

yes, there will be more packaging, transport, and store shelf space cost for a fluffier product. but generally i am no more fond of paying for air in smokeless powder than in 'spreadable' margarine, 'soft' ice cream, or 'squeezable' butt wipe. certainly not over 40% penalty in useable product mass!

when i work down the present stock of bullets, i try some of them 255 wadcutter plugs from penn.

I don't now if they make them anymore, but I have an old Lyman mold for a 230 GR full wadcutter for .45 Colt. I've cast and shot thousands of them. They're great.
