Glock first impressions

So just got my glock 17 the other day and just got back from the range with the gf after shooting 500 rounds.

Gun is very accurate, I have never done such good groupings before with any of my other guns.
I launched the target out to 20 yards, and was doing about 4 inch groups!!! I couldn't believe it, the trigger was awesome, the gun felt good and I was overall very impressed. The sights are SOOOO much easier to lock in than my norinco 1911, as they are large and bright white.
The recoil of the 9mm is much more managable than the 45acp as well for me.

I had a FTE, but I think it was from limp wristing the one shot, my gf had numers FTF and double feeds, I'm sure it was her grip as I only had one.

Gun held up fine with 500 rounds too.

Great gun, probably one of the best starter guns IMO, I should have got this a long time ago.

I think my next one will be a 1911 in 9mm as I am that impressed with the cartridge for target shooting.

Congrats on a great 9 mm combat/target pistol!

I got my G17 in June of 2006. The first shot fired pierced the cross hairs of the bull's-eye at 30-feet; I took this as a good omen.

At about 8000 rounds later, the gun has functioned 100% without a hiccup; not one.

I learned on a G21 .45 ACP, and Glocks will FTF & FTE without a tight grip. On the other hand, the massive slides eat up most of the recoil!

The nine is an excellent target round, and with today's loads, plenty for self defense. Economical too--my G17 paid for itself in about a year in ammo savings over .45 ACP.

I have a hard time picking my favorite Glock, for when I shoot Judy's G19, I love it even more! Everybody Needs A G19!

My G21 is now my bedside gun...

I have to complain about one thing, the magazine release, it really bites at the thumb and is not near enough to release without re-orintating the gun.

Glocks are oversprung, and will stovepipe, if you dont have a good grip. You can install an extended mag catch in a few minutes, I had one on mine, but it dug into my support hand thumb. Congrats on the Glock!

Glock Perfection! My Glock 17 has been about as 100% as you can get. Gaston Glock has got it right. This has to be the greatest PD handgun ever made, IMHO!

Sorry folks, but I do have to take issue with this concept of "limp-wrists". About a year and a half ago, I did a head-to-head challenge between two pistols that I own. I fired 3,000 rounds with zero cleaning, and adding oil between every 100 to 150 rounds. I hoped to see which pistol would experience a failure of ANY form first. The two pistols? Colt Series 70 reproduction, and an Glock 17 "America's Heros".

Neither failed in any way shape or form, even when I limp-wristed to the extent of holding the pistol as loose as possible, and merely controlled point. I don't buy the limp wrist excuse.

I suggest that you first change-out the magazines.

I've held my Glock 19 with only thumb and trigger finger, loosely, and couldn't manage to get it to malfunction. My wife's Colt series 80 compact officer model, well, I can't get it to run through more than a couple mags.

I doubt that limpwristing is your issue. Some people just get jams with Glocks, and I can't figure out why. My dad is like that - he can get any pistol to jam, even when I can't purposefully induce one!

I have a G34 and a G21SF. Limp wristing is real in glocks. I have never jammed a glock. My wife can make every other round FTF or FTE (double feed). As I've started teaching her proper grip and locking her wrist, jams have gone down to maybe once every few mags. I suspect her current jams are from fatigue, forgetting to grip tight, or not locking her wrist. Also, the jams were not mag related since I have a dozen mags for each glock. All my mags are numbered and all would fail for her before she started to change her technique.

"limp wristing" may not be the most accurate term, but I do think that technique can induce failures to eject in my G19. My wife gets stovepipes when she doesn't hold it firmly. I think she may also be trying to "ride" the recoil, so it's more than just not having a good grip.

I've put over 10k rounds through that same gun myself, and have had zero malfunctions of any kind. I'm not sure that I could induce one if I tried, either.

I'm pretty positive that limp wristing was the cause, as my gf had about 1 jam every two mags in 250 rounds, and I had 1 jam in 250 rounds... Go figure.

Judy's Christmas present in 2005 was a new G19 in OD, three additional mags, plus a 33-rounder, SureFire X200B, and a LaserMax, ammo and range bags, glasses and ear muffs. She'd been a very good girl...

We were getting intermittent FTFs, and the problem was quickly traced to one of the new 15-round magazines. The mag was exchanged and the problem disappeared.

But the grip does matter. I've seen new shooters at the gun shop/range have intermittent jams with a rented G17 or G19, and one of the shop's employees will come down and run two or three mags though it, with zero problems. Or, I'll shoot it with zero problems.

I guess one can input motion that cancels part of the firing cycle motion, like messing up the rhythm of a swing. Some folks also impede the slide, by their finger placement.

A loose grip on my G21 will cause a jam. Hold it properly and reliability rises to 100%. The only other times my G21 has failed to feed in .45 ACP mode, was when I got a shipment of Blazer Brass ammo, with cartridges varying up to 1/8" in length! The short ones would not feed. This is an ammo problem, not a gun problem.

My G17 has been flawless.

Gotta love Glocks.. they just rock! I have a 29, 19, 23 and 30. The 23 is by far my favorite... it's just got it all, in every way, in spades. The perfect carry gun in my view. (With a couple mods: 3.5# connector & smooth faced trigger)

DH... tell me about the "smooth faced trigger." I'd love to know about that!

Steelharp... triggers in the full size models don't have serrations on the face of the trigger shoe, so they feel smoother... you can buy these triggers for cheap (I think around $15) and drop them right into the compact models. I'm not crazy about the feel of the trigger safety thingy, so having the rest of the trigger face be smooth instead of serrated makes for a nicer feel on the finger, IMHO.

If the stock Glock sights are THAT much better than the ones on your 1911, I might suggest getting better sights. (There's certainly no shortage of them.) I put Trijicon 3-dots on my Glock AND my 1911.

I can't imagine moving from my 1911 back to a Glock and actually liking the trigger BETTER. But I guess that's why I carry a 1911 now.

yes congrats for sure on a fine weapon. you done good. that gun will last you a long time, ad most likey will oulast you. they are reliale, accurate and darn fine weapons all the way around. i prefer aftermarket sights for glocks. i just can't get used to the u shape rear, andthe fact that they are plastc so the first thing that i woul chage and probally the only hing would be to aftermarket sights ie xs 24/7 ns or trijicon ns.

If I could put new sights on the 1911 I would have, the front sight is actually part of the slide and the rear is staked in pretty good. The workmanship to replace both would be substantial, probably more than what the gun is worth. Its better for me to just get a new 1911, or build one the way I like it.

I traded a Springfield 1911 for a Glock 26 recently. As I was told a couple days ago, "Welcome to the dark side". The Glock 9mms are nice pistols.

I notice my latest G17 (H series) is more accurate than my 2nd gen G17.
They must've made some improvements. Either that, my 2nd gen G17 must've been worn out; then again, there's no such thing as worn out Glock
I would never trade my Glocks for any 1911

My friends for years touted the glory of GLOCKs - while I did not hate them, I never wanted one.

I was (<<<WAS) as SIG guy through in through. For approx 5 years I carried my P229 .40 exclusively.
Last year I found a -to good to pass up GLOCK 17 Gen 1 (New in box) bought it (I needed a 9mm)

I hate to admit it, but I shoot the GLOCK far better than I ever did with the SIG.... right out of the box... *sigh*
I sold my SIG. I truly love my GLOCK.

The only time my 17 has EVER failed to feed or eject was with my sister-in-law. She is as small as rag doll and has no grip strength. Any semi-auto that she has ever handled refuses to work for her, so on range days, she is the revolver shooter.

I believe there is something to limp wristing GLOCKs.
