into the pistol. My boss showed me his G19 doing it earlier today. He had the slide locked back. He put a snap cap in the mag and slammed the mag into the gun without riding the thumb release and the slide went forward.

Is this a problem?

Has anyone else experienced this before?

It's somewhere in between a problem and a feature (how's that for marketing speak!), but it is pretty well known and undoubtedly intentional, or at least accepted, on Glock's part. Glocks will almost always do this, although the required force of the "slam" varies a bit it seems.

Mine will do it if slammed hard- I have a friend with an HK that will do it with much less force; it was sold to him that as a a feature.

The angle at which the muzzle is held changes the tension on a spring and makes it easier or harder for this to happen. Try it and you'll know how to do it when you want, and not to do it when you don't want.

Okie,

What has your experience been in order to not have that happen? The only Glock I have is a G30 but it seems like doing it with the G19 is much easier.

You can get just about any semi auto to do it if you hold it at the right angle and slam hard enough.

Whether it is a good idea or a "feature" is debatable.

My G34 does it about 80% of the time when I slam it. I wish it did it 100% of the time when I am shooting an IDPA match.:D

My Glock 34 does 100% of the time with ONE mag, and 0% of the time with four others. Wish I could get the problem to spread to those other four mags... (Comes in handy in an IDPA match.)

My new USP .45 does not do this. This gun was made in February this year with the new USP mark on the grip without the "HK" mark. I have tried this slam operation ten times just now with a fully loaded 12 rd mag and with pretty high force, and the slide didn't move at all.

Basicly the slide stop isn't being fully engaged. If an empty magazine is being used to lock back the slide then its most likely a sign that the magazine spring is getting weak and not pushing the slide stop far enough up into its notch. It could also be that the magazine follower is worn and not engaging the slide stop as well as it should. The next progression will be that the slide will not lock after the last round at all.

Not really a problem yet but its a good indication that the magazine will need new springs and or new follower if normal slide stop operation is desired.

Some have reported that it's more likely to happen when the muzzle is above level. That used to be true with mine, now it seems as if it happens when the muzzle is down as well, but it rarely happens when the muzzle is level. It does seem to happen more often with older magazines. With my old Clinton-era 10 rounders, which I use in IDPA and IPSC where I'm limited to ten anyway, it seems to happen almost every time. My newer mags, less often.
