Glocks...Should I buy into the ugliness??

Personally, I don't think many handguns designed after 1980 look good. There are some beautiful revolvers, 1911s of course and BHPs but after that the herd thins out. XDs I find less attractive than Glocks.

I really do like the looks of glocks. Not as much as 1911s but they are kinda cool looking. What really sells me on them is reliability though. I knew a guy who kept a glock loaded but chamber empty in an open cloth pistol case in the door of his truck for 6 or 7 years without touching it. We finally took it out to shoot one day, but the slide wouldnt rack. The pistol case must have gotten wet every time the door was opened in the rain, and it was rusted tight. So the guy dropped the mag, beat the slide open with a chunk of 2x4, and shot some remoil on the rails and barrel. Then put the mag back in and shot all 15 flawlessly. The gun went from rusted shut to flawless in about 30 seconds.

I dont think there is anything to lose by giving Glock a try. Most serious shooters dont buy Glock for its beauty. It is the simplicity and performance that allures a lot of people. If you want a show piece, a collectors item, or a mantle topper, Glock really isnt going to get you far. Its true that my 1911's and BHP's get most of the attention from others, but my Glocks are the ones that get wrung out on the range and carried all day/night.

Most of the reasons the I chose Glock have already been listed in previous posts. They are simple, reliable tools that can get the job done under just about any conditions.......and thats what I need.

I'm slowly moving to an(almost) all Glock handgun collection. What guns I have, I have for a reason or purpose. I've been through many trying to fill those roles and come to realize Glocks are the best choices. Unmatched "set the standard" reliability, accuracy, general toughness and great capacity all at a very reasonable price point. My one hold out from Glock has been for EDC....I've been going from this gun to that gun ad-nauseam. After the failure of my latest EDC acquisition, a Kahr PM45 and having to carry my G30 which turns out to be not so bad, I figure going to gen4 G26 will be a piece of cake. Outside of my Buckmark .22lr I'll have and All Glock Stable...and I love it :)

Don't forget the 1 billion accessories available for the Glock line....

Take a look at this equipment survey from the 2010 IDPA National Match.

Glocks are far and away the most popular polymer pistols. These competitors need to shoot both fast and accurately. Few are budget limited with respect to buying the pistol they may want. Those using Glocks chose them because they worked the best for them, even though they really are ugly.

you guys make me laugh

"is Mary pretty"?
"she works hard"
"k, i got it hehe"

@ ns66, per #65

Glock sure didn't fool YOU, now did he? Yup, Gaston just pulled the wool over the eyes of over 7,ØØØ,ØØØ other purchasers, but not YOU, no-sirree. Even outselling 1911 clones, including all "Specialty" manufacturers, including Safe Queens. In my case I went nutz over Specialty 1911s like Detonics and Randall, but I have as many G-s as I do 1911-typos. To each his own. Dao.

By all means buy into it. i have the g 30,26, 27, 17 , 22 and they all perform flawlessly i've never had a malfunction. They are also real accurate guns even the compact models. i trust my life with any of my glocks because every time i've ever pulled the trigger one, it did exactly what it was suppose to do. i have an hk and i don't find it to be a "good looking gun", but it gets the job done and ultimately thats what you want. really no semi autos make me go WOW now thats a good looking piece except the good ole 1911 model guns. but i must say my xdm 45 was growing on me before i sold it, those are some pretty cool looking guns

One thing most people do not seem to understand about Glock keeping their guns nearly identical through the years is that it is to their great advantage to do so considering that law enforcement is a huge part of their success. The overall cost of an entire police force upgrading form old Glocks to new Glocks is far cheaper than switching from old Glocks to a new platform because you do not have to replace all the holsters when you switch to an updated Glock due to the identical outside dimensions and profile of the new-version Glock. So, not only are Glocks cheaper in the first place but you also do not have to shell out tons of money for new holsters for everyone either. Very brilliant strategy.

Really favoring the Two tone XD for my first Polymer. Went to a local shop and checked one out. So far it's in the lead, but the Glock is still lurking in the shadows. I'll probably pick one of them up around the end of the month.

Glock 19

My first choice among GLOCKS is the model 19. I carried one for several years as a duty weapon and carried it off duty as well.

It is relatively light, has a large capacity magazine, has controllable recoil, acceptable accuracy and is as reliable as any gun I have ever used.

It is just the right size as well. You have a 4 inch barrel so you either get or come close to the advertised velocity, sights that are big enough to use and have adequate sight length.

You also have a long enough grip to get a hold of without one that gives itself away under your clothes.
It is also quite compact for so capable a gun. Many guns are now sized to the same or almost the same dimensions of the GLOCK 19. My SIG 225 is almost exactly the same size as is my WALTHER P-99.

To me, it is the most versatile and useful pistol that GLOCK makes and one of the best handguns ever made.

Why on Earth a handgun should be beautiful or ugly? A pistol is just a tool. A well designed tool should be useful for the purpose it has been conceived, as well as reliable, rugged, easy to maintain, practical and so on. GLOCKS are exactly that.

Well said. I have shot hundreds of rounds through mine already, and love this little 19. Of course my 45 bang is a lot sexier and will lay out a home invader much harder, but the Glock is just a cool little gun which is super reliable and very light weight.

One thing for sure...the Glock 23 I carried on a week long backpack trip where it was exposed to continuous rain and hot humid (read sweaty) weather looked beautiful when I got home...where my beautiful Browning HiPower would have been an orange rusty mess. The weight of the Glock added to a 40lb pack was nice looking as well.
The near-bulletproof finish is the biggest reason I chose a Glock for my beater pistol. If Glock would refinish my beat up Kimber, I'd use it instead...

Glocks are reliable, accurate enough, easy to clean and have very resistant finishes.

If you already have 1911s, revolvers and other semiautos then you should branch out and get a Glock.

I do not consider pistols as just a tool. That is why I own more than one pistol and lust after many more as a handgun enthusiast. If I have the chance to choose between two guns that work just as well but one looks horrible and the other looks nice, I am gonna buy the nice one. That is why I own a Ruger LCP and not a Kel-Tec P3AT.

yeah lets get real, for civilians 99% of guns are not used as tools they are designed to be used (thank god), they are just toys :D, so of course looks matter

Handle one before you order one.

I have tiny hands, so Glocks point way high and feel absolutely terrible to me. You may have better luck.

I carry a Glock 27 & keep a Glock 21sf in my nightstand. I hardly ever show them to someone. But when I pull them out they go bang. My brother-in-law was a LEO in Alaska when his dept changed over to semi's. Of all the guns they tortured in their "Alaskian torture test" the Glock was the only one that never jambed. That's good enough for me.

I have better looking guns in my safe. I would never do the things to them that I do to my Glocks. Form followed function in both the Glock & 1911 platform. I agree that the 1911 is a more beautiful gun. I don't carry it though. I shoot it at the range, clean it each time and keep it in the safe to show off while my Glocks might get cleaned once in a while, but i know they will fire clean or dirty. It's what they do.

It's a tool... why does it have to be pretty or sexy? Are there folks who just have to envision themselves on the big screen holding onto what their idea of sexy is?

I carry a Glock 19 because it works... plain and simple. Tons of aftermarket and if it breaks, I can fix it. In my mind, that's sexy.
