Good, tough, inexpensive truck/ranch gun?

How about the Norinco versions of the Tokarev. The 213 is 9MM and the 54 is 7.62. Their both pretty much overlooked and are thus pretty cheap. I got mine unused and in the boxes with all the paperwork for about $250 each. Also, as long as one makes sure it's up to spec, a CZ 52 will do the job.

There's also the proverbial beater Model 10.

Yep, it's carried broken down. I'm not too terribly concerned about immediate use. What's the old saying, "A handgun is what you use to fight your way to a long gun". I'm fairly comfortable with the 1911 I usually carry.
The one 'rifle/carbine' I like if it is to be carried 'broken down' is the Keltec carbine as it just folds in the middle and is easily and rapidly deployed. I do like the SG though over the carbine in many cases.

I finally saw one of the H&R 45 cal single-shot rifles that I've been looking for at a local gun store. It was so ugly you could've glued boogers all over it and it would have improved it. It was so heavy I thought about putting wheels and a trailer hitch on it. The best thing I can say about the ill-fitting stock was that it was firmly attached. Yes, I still want one to go along with my Colt SAA revolver. ;-)

M44 Mosin Nagant. Around a 100 bucks, minute of hog accurate, comes with a bayonet, and hits like a 30-06, with far cheaper ammo.

An old 30-06 would work as well, with a synthetic stock, and maybe a stainless barrel? Interarms Mark X?

Pistol for hogs? Kind of starts at .44 Magnum, plus I wouldn't really want to be putting animals down with much less. Stainless Ruger Revolvers come to mind.

Probably too nice for a leave in the truck gun. I'd probably end up with a .45 Colt Ruger of some sort. Seville would be nice.

They don't call them 'hoglegs' without cause.:D

For a pistol I think you will be hard pressed to find anything reliable enough for protection cheaper than a Hi Point. Some people love to hate them but they're functional and dirt cheap. They are also heavy and feel like a brick but for something to simply keep in your truck and bang around it would be my choice.

If you want to spend a little more then my Ruger P95 has been one heck of a gun. Little too big for CCW in my opinion (although people do it) but tucks away in a car perfectly. I have thousands of rounds through mine without the first malfunction...and at $300 I think I would have paid twice that for what I've got out of the gun so far (still running strong).

That's autos only of course, if you're willing to shop around and buy used you should be able to find a reasonably priced .357. If you also want to keep a rifle then a .357/.44 revolver + lever action in matching caliber would be a great setup IMO. Only one caliber to worry about and you can shoot 38/44 special for fun/plinking/etc.

The used market is full of lightly used Marlin 30-30 rifles. They are accurate, reliable and powerful enough to handle most any situation you could find yourself in Texas. I would install a Weaver 1X3 scope and a sling. With Hornady Leverevolution ammo you have 200 yard plus reach.
