California Sets National Standard To Stop Gun Accidents

Sacramento, CA - The Million Mom March united with the Brady Campaign to
Prevent Gun Violence hailed today's enactment of SB 489, which the group
sponsored, calling it "the toughest handgun safety standard in the
country." SB 489 will require new semiautomatic handguns to have an
indicator that clearly shows when the gun is loaded and a magazine
disconnect safety to prevent the gun from firing when the ammunition
magazine is removed.

"If this bill had been law when a boy decided to show off a gun, my
beloved son would be alive today," said Griffin Dix (Alameda chapter),
Secretary of the Million Mom March California State Council, whose son was
accidentally shot by a friend. "Deaths like my son's are foreseeable and
preventable. If a cheap disposable camera can tell us how many pictures
are left, surely a handgun should indicate when there is a bullet hidden
in the chamber ready to fire."

"The Million Mom March is three-for-three the past three years in passing
our top California legislative priority," said Jane Roth (Napa chap.),
President of the MMM CA State Council. "In 2001 we passed the Handgun
Safety License bill, in 2002 we repealed the gun industry's special legal
immunity, and in 2003 we've passed the toughest handgun safety standard in
the country. This new law will save lives and prevent gun accidents."

"Million Mom March chapters throughout California worked hard for this
bill," said Rebecca Gonzales (Sacramento chap.), MMM CA State Council
Legislative Liaison. "We are pleased that Governor Davis has the courage
to take on the gun lobby and do what's right for the safety of
Californians by signing SB 489."

SB 489 requires new semiautomatic handgun models sold in California to
have either a clear loaded-chamber indicator or a magazine disconnect
safety by 2006 and to have both safety devices by 2007.
Date of Release: September 24, 2003

What the hell is the point of having it not fire if the magazine is taken out?

The magazine disconnect is to protect terminally stupid people who think that removing the magazine empties the gun.

How many children in California die each year from gun accidents? Is it even 12? For young children, the national figure is like 50 - CA has 10% of the population you would expect 4-6 kids per year to be killed accidentally.

The problem is - what are they going to do when a kid is accidentally killed by a gun with these features. I am sure some kids are killed by shotguns and rifles - but they focus only on handguns.

It would be interesting to go back 10 years or so and see how many accidental shootings occur with guns with at least one of these features - lots of guns have the magazine disconnect.

I'm getting sick of this constant Orwellian twisting of "gun control" into "gun safety". On Brit Hume's show tonight, Mort was reading through Clark's positions: one of them was "pro gun-safety".

I miss the People's Republic of California about 2% as much as I'd miss a dose of some wretched venereal disease.

I sincerely hope Californians will do the right thing and throw that socialist parasite out of office.

Oh, I'm so Grateful to GovernorGray! I feel so much safer now.

s'cuse me; I'm off to Home Depot to replace all of my old five-gallon buckets. I'm sure that they'll have new ones with a water-level indicator gauge on the side.
