doc540 I use your system. I have several handguns that were cheap to buy because of age, brand, mil-surp, or whatever. I shoot hundreds of rounds through them with no problems or fix them if they malfunction and shoot hundreds of rounds again. You should test your car gun no matter what it cost anyway. I keep one in the glovebox and don't worry about it, ready to go when needed. This is full size 45, 9mm, or 38 and not my carry gun. Two loaded mags with defense ammo and box of practice ammo under the seat. Sometimes coming home on a 2hr commute I'll pull over in the woods and ram a beverage and shoot the can for practice. No problem staying awake the rest of the way.
