I was there last month for a wedding and saw a GIANT gun shop just outside of town - it was past the Varsity and before you got to the Cracker Barrell. Name escapes me right now.
If you want to get ripped off, go to Franklin's. If you want a good deal, roll on up to Hull (just a bit north of Athens) and visit Georgia Outdoor Sports. Friendly folks, much better prices.
I live in Athens but haven't bought anything from either Franklin's or Georgia Outdoor Sports.
Franklin's has a very large selection but their prices seem a little high to me. Also, the last time I was in there I asked to see a S&W 38 special snubby and was handed 1 32, 1 38, 1 357, and 1 22lr revolvers. The guy behind the counter obviously had no clue or just didn't care enough to check the caliber before handing it to me. I guess this comes from them hiring college students . They have a nice selection though so you should be able to find something you're interested in. Also, during their sales, they have some good prices. You can see their website at http://www.franklinsofathens.com.
I did use Georgia Outdoor Sports to do a transfer of a handgun I bought from someone on THR. The people there seemed very nice and helpful. They are just 5 minutes outside of Athens. Their website is at http://www.georgiaoutdoorsportsathens.com/.
Clyde's is good to go (next door to the Police Academy) - great prices on police trade-ins. It and The Firing Lane are the only 2 class-III dealers in Athens that I know of... Maybe Georgia Outdoor Sports is too....
For anyone in the area who hasn't done so, they should visit the Firing Lane. The last manager is gone, the owner is now the manager, and he and his wife have done a fair amount of work cleaning up the place. They now participate in both the Glock and Smith and Wesson programs, so there are more and newer rental pistols available.
Definitely check the pawn shops. One here in Madison closed its doors recently, and I got a brand-new Mossberg 500A (Accu-Choke barrel, ported) for $245.00.
