good power level and fun to shoot. I don't think the .30-30 ever went anywhere,

Thats the funniest thing I've read in quite awhile. Marlin and Winchester have made over 10 million lever actions in 30-30 alone. The 30-30 didn't just go anywhere, it went everywhere. And best of all its still going there.

There is a reveiw of the Mossburg lever action in this months issue of "Guns" by John Taffin. You might want to pick up a copy.

I haven't heard much about the Henry. Those that have the 22 lever guns seem pleasd with them.

Ratshooter...

I think you misread my post. I wasn't suggesting that the .30-30 lacks in sales, popularity, or usefulness. I was commenting that it hasn't gotten the press it deserves lately. It seems that all the magazines are interested in some form of magnum.

I love the .30-30 and currently have about five of them.

The first deer I shot with a .30-30 was in TX. It dropped in its' tracks. Later that day I shot a good sized hog, it went straight down too. I have been hooked ever since.

My favorite thing to do at our deer camp was to grab my .30-30 and take a walk around the lease during the day. Most of they guys would just sit at camp and BS or drink. I dropped some pretty nice bucks that were bedded down. It made me a much better hunter as well.

Have a good one,

Matt

If I misunderstood your post then I apologise. Like you I grab my 30-30 every chance I get. It has to be one of the most useful rounds a person can own.

Easy on brass and powder and works just about as well with a cheap lead slug.

Your right, the old 30-30 doesn't get a lot of play in the press. I guess everyone knows what it will do. The newer calibers have some mystery to them. One of the mysteries is why the hell do they cost so much?

When the short mags came out and gunwriters were using them on game every deer shot with one of the new magnum rounds was killed in easy 30-30 range. I thought, So What? Ross Seyfreid was the only person that I know of who made a 300 yard kill with one of the Winchester 270 wsm rounds.

I just checked out the Henry

it looks like you have to remove the magazine tube to load the rifle. That would be a deal killer for me. I really like being able to top off my leverguns as I go. If I had to stop, remove the tube, drop rounds in, not poke the cedar tree with the tube, and then close it just to load or top off, I would snap.

Looks like I will stick with my Marlins or Winchester. Hopefully the Mossbergs will sell well enough for them to make a trapper.

Krochus, why not a break action?

I've been too disappointed in the past by the accuracy inconsistency that's indicative of the break action itself. Be it a $200 handi or a $700 encore they all suffer from the same faults

"I would jump all over a Ruger No1 in 30-30"

You would have to beat ME to that one and I have a fast horse. But even if you did beat me to it - I would just come to your home and steal it.

Have often thought of just having one built but I know little about that process and have no trusted artisans to consult. :(

Ratshooter .... I think the reason the 30/30 doesn't get a lot of press is because the gunmakers think they need "new" to sell guns and the gunscribblers have been damning the 30/30 with faint praise for so long. I'd bet MOST people (especially city people) don't have the slightest idea how good the 30/30 is. Fact is, it's very obvious there are more than a few citizens haunting THR who don't have the faintest clue about the 30/30.

Shawnee and Krocus if you check the Charles Daly website they have a Mini-Sharps rifle in 30-30 for around $1230. Its a might bit pricey but looks really nice. Plus it weighs less than 6 pounds.

There ar several caliber choices like 22, 22mag, 38/55 and 357 that I remember. Plus of course 30-30.

I went back and looked again. The 218 bee, 44-40 and 45 colt are also available. It is an 80% scale rifle of the full sized sharps.

I picked up one of the Mossbergs last month. So far I have about 60 rounds through it and I've been very impressed. I've mounted a scope and in the next week or two plan on getting some range time with it and in a couple weeks I'll be using it for deer season.

I'm not sure why everyone keeps saying the Mossberg is so expensive... I paid $349 out the door for mine, I thought that was decent. Are you guys seening higher prices?

Hi Ratshooter...

Thanks Rat !

Here's a "L'il Sharps" for about 250 less...

At $1229 MSRP the Charles Daly may not be too ompetitive in the Sharps market. Many sell in the $700-$850 range. Don't know about quality but a $400 savings probably looks good to lots of folks.

A Sharps in 30/30 would be fun but the Charles Daly "L'il Sharps" has a 12" L.O.P. and that's not good for me (or most adult men).

Am still investigating the re-zoning of a Ruger #1 to 30/30 though. :)

Anyone have an update on the Mossberg 464? i'm looking for a good 30-30 and so far the best option seems to be picking up a vintage win 94.

i heard the front bbl band on the mossberg is plastic.. can anyone verify if there is any plastic on the gun? that is a big turn off for me

Henry guns are expensive but you get what you pay for.
I know for a fact that the action is much smoother in a Henry than a marlin ever thought of being.

I have not seen a Henry .30-.30 but I have their .22 and a Marlin 39. No comparison. The Henry action might be "smoother" but the marlin is way ahead in materials quality. The Henry .30-30 weights 8.3 lb and costs almost twice as much as the new Marlin. I don't get it. To me the Marlin is the best piece of work in the class. People must just want something different.

"Henry guns are expensive but you get what you pay for"

That is correct. You are paying MUCH more for the Henry and you are getting a rifle that is nowhere near the quality of a Marlin.

I will never understand what people see in the Henry.
