I have read a lot lately about the choices of Smith
& Wesson front sight's on target grade firearm's.
I was just wondering if the McGivern gold bead
is still available; and how do you preceive one
being installed on a 6" 686-5? I would like to
hear some opinion's, please.

Bought a Model 29 Classic back in 1995 that had interchangeable front sights and that gun still carries a gold bead, best front sight for field use IMHO. Number 2 son has the gun now and he likes that sight too.

Is the front sight pinned on your 686? Smith might be able to change it for you. I'd give them a call, 1-800-331-0852.

:D :D :D

Smith & Wesson were and still are the prime supplier of McGivern style front sights. I suspect they could fit one on your revolver, but expect the possibility of a stiff charge for custom work. Ed preferred this kind of gold bead for fast work on aerial targets, and it obviously worked for him.

Do they still use a standard square notch rear sight with a gold bead? IIRC, Ed McGivern used the std groove in the topstrap for a rear along with the bead.

Greeting's Again Folk's & Many Thanks For The Excellent
Opinions!

I'm sure that this procedure would be a bit of custom work;
cuz I don't see a set-up for interchangeable front sight's.
Mine has the standard red ramp insert; and while it is very
functional, I think the McGivern gold bead might be a tad
easier to see?

I'm now sure if they would still use the white outline rear
sight with this set-up or not. I think I will take RON's advice
and give Smith a call first thing Monday (13 January 03) morning!
Again thanks for the reply's, and I will advise ya'll of my
finding's.
