I'm interested in an autoloader in .40 S&W that carries more than 10 rounds in the magazine. I'm aware of the Springfield XD series and several Para Ordnance models.

What other makes and models should I be looking at?

Go for the best. SIG P-226. 12 round capacity. Stellar reliability out of the box, well-deserved reputation for accuracy. Tremendous ergonomics.

STI Edge or Eagle. 17+1 with standard mags, 20+1 with basepads. 1911 type platform, light, accurate, and DEAD SEXY!!!!!!!!!!

sig 226 - 12
sig 229 - 12
beretta 96 - 12 (?)
hk usp - 12

that's all on the top of my head... there are variations on each, too... eg, sig 229, 229 dak, etc etc...

Glock 22 - 15+1
Glock 23 - 13+1

Excellent out-of-box reliability, good aftermarket options, many supply sources for mags, holsters, barrels, etc.

Good shootin'....

XD Tactical 40

12+1

if $ is no object, get a Sig. as far as Glock vs XD, that's your call. i got an XD only because it felt better in my hand. both are awesome shooters.

Really, can the average service pistols compare to these?

Taurus 24/7 - 15 + 1 rounds in a really nice, inexpensive (relatively - say $340 +/-) pistol.

Try it, you'll like it.

glock. simple, reliable, way more accurate than any of us is likely to shoot in a fight for our lives. it won't need a billion trips to the gunsmith to coax it to work right.

used to be all against the glock then i bought one and i realized what a great platform it is. when you stop trying to have the latest, greatest, century old pistol and you put aside all the ninja fashion, glock is the workhorse that gets the job done. sure, sig and h&k are excellent pistols but they cost significantly more. the xd looks like a great pistol too, though i've never shot one. i've heard they worked the bugs out of the sigma and it works fine now. my buddy has one and hasn't ever had a problem, plus they're a little cheaper than a glock. me, i carry a model 23. i feel it is the perfect balance of power, capacity and size/weight. it also fits my hand well. the other nice thing about a glock is it's gonna be hard for some jackass da to make you look bad by your choice of weapon because of the number of police departments who issue them.

HK USP and USP compact
Sig 229 and 226
Steyr (somewhat obscure)
Browning/FN Hi-Power
Springfield XD
Beretta 96 and CX4
Smith 4003 and 4006
Walther P99
Glock 22 and 23
CZ (Various Models)

These are off the shelf, higher capacity .40’s.
The USP Compact would be my personal choice.

How about a list of non-polymer hi-cap .40s?

CZ 75B;
the non-Sigma S&Ws;
the BHP;
Beretta 96;
SIG P226ST;

what else?

Oh, and the 1911-type .40s. By the way, those are some awfully big billboards on those STIs.

ryan, those sherer mags suck. i had one for my glock and it would fail about 2 or 3 times per mag. but i bought a couple extensions from these guys haven't had a chance to try 'em yet but they came well recommended. it also makes sense that a 20 round column should work. 30 rounds of .40 is just too much to make a magazine reliable.
