Howdy CAMPBELL49T,
Well, can't comment on the Hi-Point .40, except from what I've read from other owners.
I own a couple of the 9mm version, and they're a hoot!
Both versions seem to have the following characteristics:
Inexpensive, Accurate, reliable, lifetime warranty, in a number of tests they've proved more accurate than the Beretta or the Ruger 9mm carbines. Best of all they look a little weird and seem to really hack off the gun snobs, who seem to think that if you don't spend as much on a firearm as you do on a car (like they do) that the gun must be junk and you can't know a thing about firearms.
Be prepared to laugh off the "Planet of the Ape Gun" cracks.
I do know several .40 owners who claimed to have harvested whitetail with theirs (at hunting pistol ranges, under 50 yards. I wouldn't do that personally but with care and proper placement ... why not?) I know of people who have taken deer with 9mm and .38 Spcl pistols so a .40 S&W is certainly capable. Mostly the 9 and the .40 seem to be used as big bore plinkers, hunting Varmints up to coyote size, and Self Defense.
Red Dots seem to be a very popular sight choice, but the irons that come on them really aren't bad at all.
Like a lot of current production semi-autos they may need a couple of hundred rounds 'break-in' and if there is a weakspot, it's that their magazines are maybe a little on the flimsy side. Doesn't do to bash them around unnecessarily.
Several forums dedicated to the Hi-Points (Google is your friend) Comments are almost universally positive from owners, most of the knocks come from general forums and non owners with strong opinions.
Do check the Hi-point dedicated forums or sub-forums to get a better picture.
Personally. I'd say that if .40 is your thing, get it you'll like it, and if you don't you'll have no trouble getting your money out of it if you sell it privately.
Good Luck whatever you decide!
Regards,
