My dad is wanting to get into shotgunning, thanks to my incessant talk of my 12-gauge and my constant ordering of parts and letting him help with the installation.

The problem is, that he has a titanium plate and 4 screws holding his neck together, which has never properly healed. This extremely limits the calibers and kinds of weapons he is able to shoot. One bad recoil kick and he's on the floor in pain and out of commision for a few days. Anything with regular recoil can end up leaving him paralyzed.

SO, we came to the conclusion that a .410 shotgun would probably be the best route for him, considering the state of his neck and back. The problem is that the only .410s I've seen are all low-capacity youth models. Awhile back we bought him a 1956 Mossberg 2-shot bolt-action that he flat-out loved, but we had to sell it during the recession.

I've seen a handful of lever-actions and pump-action .410s from a variety of manufacturers, and that revolver-carbine from Taurus, but what would be the best for him?

I'm thinking at least a 4-shot magazine, and anything not mossberg, unless it's old(He's as stubborn as a mule on that one...)

Max price hopefully is around 500, But that can go up and down a bit as needed.

If ANYONE out there knows of a good .410 with decent or high capacity, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Well the only one i can think of is a mossberg 500 all pupose in 410 bore, so im not sure what to tell you.

Does he want the extra capacity?

For just fun at the range there are a lot of great single
shot .410's out there.

Taurus has a new 410 Revolver shotgun. looks awesome comes in either rifled barrel or smooth bore. (i would go smooth bore) gonna try to find a pic.

The circuit Judge is on my short list for 2011. I recently got into squirrel hunting and a revolver 410 sounds like a pretty good time.

Remington 1100 will give him his requirements.......(well, except maybe on price unless used).

Excellent gun, comes in a variety of configurations

Wow....That Circuit Judge is pretty neat.
Barring any problems with them they will sell a boat load of them I do predict.
I think I am going to check one out.

The only thing that worries me about the Circuit Judge - it's a revolver. Revolvers can get out of time. When that happens lead gets shaved off and flies out between the cylinder and forcing cone. To date, the only ones I've owned that didn't were Rugers and honestly, I haven't shot them enough that they're even close to needing to worry about this - which is to say they might too.
Anyhow, do you want your hand in front of that cylinder if that happens? I like my fingers to be all attached and fully functional, thank you very much.

Like others, I'd also look at the Saiga, a good pump action .410, or IIRC Marlin and Winchester both made lever actions chambered in .410 (but they were limited to 2.5 inch shells) that might show up used.

I second the Browning BPS Hunter. Hard to beat for fit and finish. At 6 3/4 lbs I can't imagine much recoil from the .410. I don't think he can find a better gun for the money based upon your criteria.

my original "judge" locked-up the 2nd round of shells i loaded ,,,hammer fell on .410 shot-sheell and stuck there,, trigger wouldnt move, couldnt pull hammer back,, carefully ejected-cylinder and then it seemed to work again, but i never trusted it again,, traded shortly after,,,

I believe there is a shield in the design to protect from this watch the "gunblast" review on youtube its very descriptive.

Would he consider a semi-auto? The Saiga is available in .410 and they have 10-round magazines for them.

They make 15 rounders as well. Of course one needs to be mindful of 922r compliance before they go and stick a 10 or 15 round mag in them. As far as my uses I like the saiga. I cannot compare its recoil to other 410 guns I simply have not shot enough to give a very meaningful comparison. That said, the S12 is perhaps the lightest recoiling 12 gauge I've shot.
