I was reading the discussion where someone said that an AR type rifle with a drum magazine could easily fire 60 or more rounds per minute. I have always understood that machine guns fire from an open bolt to prevent heat from cooking off the rounds. Would an AR type rifle get so hot that it would go full auto under a sustained high rate of fire? If so, at what point would this occur?

An AR-15 semi-auto could easily fire 60 rounds a minute using 20 round mags, three mag changes, and a cigarette break thrown in.

But not forever.

It will eventually overheat to the point the barrel or gas tube will fail.

Cook-offs only occur if a round is left in the chamber long enough to get up to firing temperature.
It cannot happen instantly as heat cannot transfer from the chamber to the brass case that fast.

It only would become a concern if you stopped firing, and allowed a chambered round to "cook" long enough.

Test the theory, you'll cherry the barrel.

I'm assuming you speak of the "experts" brought in about the Aurora shooting. They're wanks. But, as rcmodel said, it's easy to pull the trigger once a second.

Those dummies on Youtube were able to set an AK on fire (bump firing, IIRC) without it running away on them. It just stopped working once it was completely engulfed for a minute (and the piston rod/barrel finally bent) after round 700

A buddy of mine in the army had three of those Beta Mags and we went out to see how fast he could shoot them. About 3/4 the way through mag number three, bump firing, it started to cook off. It ran the rest of that mag out and he set his AR against a tree to cool; when he picked it back up after about 10 minutes, the barrel was bent. I don't remember the brand but it had an M4 style carbine barrel and bent at the thin (203 mount) spot; it hit about two and a half feet low at 25 yds after that.

firing for no accuracy my buddy who has nothing but money to blow on ammo(hes single) went through a 100 round beta mag in under 30 seconds so yes 60 rounds in a minute is easy

Don't you love the idiot talking heads discussing "Why does anyone need a 600 round per minute semi automatic rifle?". LOL. Bill O'reilly made an a#@ of himself the other night and Ben Ferguson was saying that mags over 30 rounds are banned. Ben was also saying that the 922r rules were for all rifles, not just imported. Where do they get this stuff? WOW, uneducated media.

I can dump a couple of mags in a minute, easy.
