Himalayan Imports Khukuris

Has anyone ever got a khukuri form Himalayan Imports? If so, what do you think of the product and the company? Im strongly considering an Ang Khola, but I would like to hear from others who have dealt with them. Thanks for your answers.

I'm told there are very good if you like the design. They are expensive compared to a machete. But they are more of a long knife than a machete.

They are pretty much the crème de la crop when it comes to Khukris. They sharpen up really well and make excellent choppers and working blades. I have an HI Ang Khola I use it in my gardening and land maintenance.

Just be aware you get the good ones. There is lots of cheap tourist tripe around that has cheaper steel that won't keep it's edge for very long.

With HI you end up with an excellent blade and well worth the money.

Did you have to wait for yours, or did it ship immediately after you ordered it? From what I understand, sometimes there is a consiterable wait for them to be imported. I could be wrong. tho.

Mine arrived after a few weeks. Not too bad a wait time.

You don't have to wait for HIs, unless you have a custom order. Most customers have theirs 3 days after placing the order if you buy something in stock.

You should consider what you plan on doing with a kuk. 15" AK is a great all-around big knife. 19" or so is a very large dedicated chopper, and very efficient at larger tasks, but too much for chopping light brush.

If you want more of a light brush tool, a shorter Chitlangi or Sirupati is what you want. I've owned maybe 20 or more HIs, and still have 4 HI kukuris (I think), in addition to a couple of other HI knives. Here's a pic from a few years ago...

I would recommend visiting the Himalayan Imports section on bladeforums.com, where you can chat with the lady that runs the operation, get lots of feedback from a choir of the faithful, and maybe snap up a DOTD (deal of the day) when you've decided on what you want.

I've used a 16" HI AK, and found it to be very nicely made (especially at the price), and very serviceable. The steel was appropriately hard and tough, the handle needed a minor burr removed.

I find the AK a little heavier than I need. My usual Kuk is a non HI model a friend gave me, about 15", and a bit lighter than the AK was, but it's a very serviceable tool I'd hate to be without.

Actually, Resident Evil is a good example of how not to use a kuk.

You don't really slice with a kuk in defense. You chop/hack with it.
