Son in Law called this afternoon & said his Mother bought his Dad a Howa. Chambered in .308, it is bolt. I think he said a Model 1500.
What do you guys think of the gun for an occasional hunter?
I have read some reviews but never even held one.
Thank you in advance.

I think a lot of the gun for any purpose, occasional or every day. Quality gun.

I've seen a custom prairie dog .223 build on a Howa barreled action; shoots jagged holes, not groups. I own a Weatherby Vanguard Sporter, also a Howa barreled action, in .30-06. Shoots excellent groups, solidly built.

I've got a youth 7mm08, I ended up using it in blinds. Nice gun, I need to put some new glass on it. I have a stainless 2506 that really doesn't group well off a bench, but I have made the most amazing shots with it. My favorite hunting rifle in either safe now, and I'm a Savage nut.

I have a Weatherby Vanguard made by Howa.
According to my research, Howa made triggers for some other companies. They also made S&W 1500's & I think some Mossberg rifles.
All accounts are good.

the best overall made , of the entry level rifles. solid , forged, one piece type parts, plus other excellent goodies in the stock, and action parts.
A solid performer.

I've come close to buying one several times and think they are a quality gun. This may not be an issue to everyone, but my only complaint, and the only reason I've never bought one is because they are so heavy. At 7 3/4 pounds they are a full pound or more heavier than a lot of their competators.

I have a HOWA 1500 varminter supreme. It's awesome!!!...but very heavy especially with the bull barrel. You can't beat it for the money though. I sighted it in clamped into a rifle rest and at 100 yards the groupings were smaller than dimes. Laying prone I got them about the size of a quarter.

I have a bunch of Howa and/or Vanguard rifles...

They're absolutely the best buy available in this country right now, considering the quality that you're getting for the money.

They'd even be a good buy if they cost appreciably more...

Your S-I-Ls mother did well...

Forrest
