I am thinking about building another 6.5 or maybe a 6mm in short action. I already have the 6.5-06 AI. but I want one I can shoot a lot of rounds with. what do you guys think? keep in mind I like odd case/calibers. I just like to have something difrent...

the good old Remington 700. they are cheap and easy to get after market parts for. the 260 does sound good, just not sure how the barrel life would be compared to the 47.

6.5x47

The 6.5x 47 is the hot new rifle for high power silhouette. I just bought a hunter rifle from someone who had one built with a Remington 700 clone action, Hart barrel, Jewell trigger and Pharr stock for a standard silhouette rifle. I would like to get another one for myself but would get the MacMillan Anscutz-style stock instead of a Pharr for a standard rifle.
The only drawback is that Lapua charges nearly $1.00 apiece for their brass, almost twice as much as their own 6.5x55 brass.

Finprf, you read my mind. I want that same set up. JD you are corect the 260 is cheeper and easyer but a lot of guys own one. I like something difrent. but that would be on my list if. it weren't so close to my 6.5-06.

6.5 Creedmoor is similar and brass is cheaper. Although seems like Lapua is the only source for 6.5x47 and Hornady the only source for 6.5 Creedmoor. I am sure the Lapua brass is higher quality

6X47 is just a 222 remington necked up to 6mm. this cartridge was invented before 223 existed, while the military was playing with 222 remington magnum. cases for 6X47 can be made from any of the 3. the cartridge is known among bench resters as particularly accurate up to 600-800 yards, less subject to wind than smaller calibers. 6.5X47 is just an extention of the idea, and would feed thru AR magazines well, but is not potent enuf to give the 800 yard punch that recent contenders in 6.5 can.

The 6x47 is based on the 222 Rem Mag. 6x45 is based on the 223 case.

The 6.5x47 Lapua is based on a 308 head size case, and is not remotely related to the 6x47.

and the 6.5x47L uses small primers and was around before lapua started making 308win "palma" with small primers, afaik

Light rifle cartridge

.

I've got an M700 LTR in 6.8 SPC and it's a gem of a light rifle cartridge
set up. It does a nice job with bullet weights from 90 to 130.

This is a cartridge with similar ballistics to the 6.5x47 you mentioned,
but there are some advantages. Factory brass is a big one. Both
will do the same job. You might want to consider this cartridge for
your short action light rifle build. (If you are talking about the Lapua
cartridge, then these comments does not apply).

good shooting, dxr

yes I am talking about the lapua. I was thinking about a 22/24 inch kreiger this time. I have always used heart or shilen barrels. this will be on a Remington 700 short action with a macmillan stock. I have always used HS or B&C. it will have a jewel trigger. I think the 6.5 would maybe be a little better for me because of the high BC bullets over the 6.8. but im not stuck on anything. this won't be for hunting. I havr a truck load of those rifles. this one is paper and P-doggies only. any other good pics out there? JD almost had me thinking about a .260 Rem. but I would probably get something like that in a new rifle not a new build.

If I had the money I would get a .260 because I have a .308 and a couple hundred rounds of once fired brass I could reform if I had the reloading equipment, I should be getting my press and dies and stuff in the mail before tuesday next week.
Also an eagle stock pack.

what press did you get JD? sorry for the sloppy guys I use my phone to come here. that was picks on my last post. wasn't suposed to be pics.

that's cool, just be careful. I use the good old rock chucker. I like RCBS presses. I made this thread to make sure I don't miss out on some great new round I was unaware of.

I don't have anythig to add to this thread but want to camp on because I was thinking of doing something along the same lines. I have this idea that I'd like to build a 25-223 AI for woods hunting. It's odd but can use 223 cases that I have boatloads of and the 25 cal bullet (~90 grains) is good for deer. And, it would be mild enough that my daughter could shoot it without developing a flinch.

that's pretty interesting. sounds like a cool project. im a big Ackly fan but I don't remember that round. it might have made a good AR round even for military use.

The 6.5 blows away the 6.8...don't let anyone tell you different. The BC on 6.8 projectiles sucks compared to 6.5 offerings.

You have a tough choice since the 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5x47 Lapua, .260, 243 are all great choices. The 6.5x47 is nice since you get Lapua brass...downside is Lapua is the only game in town for brass. With the 6.5 CM, you get factory ammo from Hornady.

The main impetus for the 6.5x47 is so that you don't have long bullets intruding into the powder space. Performance is similar to 260 and the cartridge was designed specifically for LR shooters using a 0.473 case head 6.5 in a short action.

Lapua brass is some of the best there is, but availability is, as noted, limited.

I'm using Lapua load data, plus some loads derived from QuickLoad. Since I use Lapua powders and Scenar bullets, this is not a problem.

Here's the Lapua data:

BTW, what bullet weights are you thinking? H414, H4350 and H380 are all good powders, as is Ramshot Hunter, 750 and the VV powders.

Although I do not yet own 6.5x47 I've done tons of research and after looking into it from all the different sides and comparing it with other calibers, I always came back to 6.5x47.

A big thing about 6.5x47 is that it is not barrel burner. You'll go 2,000 to 3,000 shots without new barrel. And that is only something that .308 can offer, while .308 is far less accurate. Second thing is you'll be a king of the world up to 600 yards and possibly up to 1,000 yards. And the third thing there are excellent, consistent and sturdy Lapua cases out there, just waiting to be reloaded many many times. OK, fourth, you can use it for plinking targets, since recoil is really on the low side. And there is a ton of good reloading info that will get you started. And there are some realy good bullets, with BC above 0.55 so you'll definitelly be in the top 5%.

On the downside, you won't be able to shoot moose. Some big bucks would be illegal in most countries. But medium sized deer, coyote, prairie dogs etc. are all at your mercy.

nice jerkface. guntech I will be shooting 140grn bullets because that's what I built my 6.5 AI for with the 1-8 twist. that way I don't have to have a bunch of difrent bullets. not sure what brand to go with. I have 100 berger VLDs left and im not sure when or if they will ever start making them again. I thought the Amax might be a second choice. have you shot RL-15 or RL-17 in it? im ready to start getting my crap together today. im gonna go get my stock first. I waited 4 months on my last one. I ain't doing that again.
