I've always wanted to shoot a hole into 'quarter' (yes, 25 cents). Just like the ones you see in movies and exhibition shows.

Anyway, I got me a 2x4 plank, duct-taped the quarter (about 2 revolutions), marked my target, positioned the plank, pulled back appox. 20-25yrds back, loaded my XD40, aimed..."BANG!" ...First shot, I hit the quarter dead-on center, but I blasted it outta sight. I cant find where it went.

So, I tried to do it again...this time I got (2)2x4's and 6 revolutions of duct-tape...marked, positioned, aimed and "BANG!" ...Second shot, again, dead-on center, BUT AGAIN, blasted the quarter outta there...and I can't find where it went.

I lost .50 cents.

...but I am please that my Springfield XD40 has surpassed my expectations. I have a pretty good grouping and could aim 'bullseye' if I have to, but after my first and second shot (attempt to hole a quarter), it solidified my satisfaction with the XD.

But how do I keep my quarter from blasting off? I want to be able to come and show the wife (and some friends).

Peace,

don't feel bad

Don't feel bad. Lots of people have tried to shoot .50 cents and yet he's still rapping...

That is a trick, isn't it?

Firstly, what kind of rounds are you using? FMJ, I hope.

Next, the backstop... this is tricky, because you want to have a backstop that will let the bullet pass through, but not the quarter. Personally, when I did it, I set the quarter on an old railroad tie and blasted it. Of course, it was very hard to find, but after a while, I decided to dig into the RR tie -- and wouldn't you know it, there it was.

Try using a bigger piece of wood, like a railroad tie. You'll probably have to dig, but you at least have a chance of getting that quarter out of there.

Thanks Wes...

...yes, I used a Winchester FMJ (185gr.)...I'mma have to try your suggestion. How did yours turn out? Was it perfectly holed or slighly dented?

peace,

tape a big day-glo plastic streamer to the quarter? nothing aimed at stopping it, maybe just slow it down and make it followable.

jsut a thought, haven't tried it.

if the quarter is slipping out to the sides, put a perimeter of nails in place.

how heat resistent are quarters? seems to me burning the backstop is easier than digging the quarter out.

Mine turned out well. It was actually on my first shooting trip with my BHP 9mm. It made a clean hole, but I didn't hit it dead-center... still cool, though.

I've tried doing it to pennies, too. This was how I actually discovered that pennies aren't solid copper anymore. :scrutiny: They're zinc, I believe, that's been copper plated. They don't bend, they break into pieces.

I think it will actually turn out better if you just find something to set the quarter on, and as someone else said, tape a short, bright-colored streamer to it, since they WILL fly off -- sometimes as much as 40 feet.

Keep at it... eventually you'll get one.

...or maybe I could just bring the entire piggy-bank, shoot the hog and hope to see something shot...

...thank for the responses

peace,

The answer is much simpler than you are expecting....

Take a middling to large, reasonably heavy cardboard box out. Close the flaps and tape the coins to the front of the box. When you hit a coin, it will fly through the front of the box, but will just bounce around inside. When you're done shooting, open the box and extract the coins from the cardboard dust.

This works very well with Chuck-E-Cheese type tokens. I imagine it would work with other coins too.

Nice!

Here is what happens when I shot the reactive 25m target at my club - the target was unscratched, but the bullet sure took a beating:

Load was 4.3gr Winchester STX behind a West Coast Bullets 185 grain semi-wadcutter plated, probably once-fired S&B brass.

so how do gun exhibitionist flips the quater in the air...shoots it dead center and catch the darn quarter?
I've watched videos of Bob Munden shooting coins out of the air.

First of all, he loses a lot of them.

But when he finds one he does it by listening for them. They must make a noise when he hits one on the edge and it goes spinning off--you can watch him cock his head and he'll say something like: "That one's gone." or "I think I know where that one went."
