I'm in Minnesota and I can feel it. Waaaay spooked.

As a southern gentleman on the elevator said to me today, there's a thin veneer of civilization over us. When the lights go out, it is gone.

Wifeypoo and I are makin' some SHTF plans this weekend.

You have my number. Use it if it ever really gets bad here in MN. I have somewhere to go that is away from the cities, and, from what I've seen, away from the cities is where we would want to be.

Oh, and I hope your class went well.

By all means, buy the ammo. What's the worst that happens, you have an extra case of ammo?

I have already talked to my wife about a few adjustments I would like us to make.
1. Keep the gas gage above 1/2 tank all the time (wife just loves running on 'E').
2. Keep more cash on hand. Both of us have gotten very accustom to going cashless.
3. Over-shop groceries. I would feel better if we had more non-perishables stocked up.

My wife thought this was a little silly but I asked her to provide a compelling reason not to do any of the these things. What's the worse that happens? We have gas in the cars, money in our wallets, and food in the pantry. With us not know what the actual fallout will be from possible gas shortages, it seems prudent.

Cops looting wal-mart and who knows what else? and some people can't figure out why we can't trust them? Go figure huh

All of this craziness has actually led some of my lberal acqauintances to rethink their position on gun control.

Time to set up down there and just start shooting people. Cops first because they should be protecting the people and not breaking the law, I had no respect for the cops in New Orleans when I was there and now the world has proof.
It should be legal to pop some son of a bitch cop that steals like that.
Shame on them!

Last night on (hack) MSNBC they were in a Walmart filming the chaos of the looters, when they ran across these two fat black women cops, they followed them for 45 of so seconds while they fill their shopping cart with shoes and CD's all the things needed to survive with out power.

(side note, how the hell can you be a cop if your THAT fat, does not LA have standards for their police? Disgusting!)

The host asked the ossefers' what they were doing, donut puncher #1 said looking for looters, when he pointed out that the looters were all around them, to include the ossifers' they turned their backs to the camera.

When he pressed them for their orders on what to do about the looters she threatens to arrest him for pressuring her.
They let the prisoners out of the jails, and told t he law abiding citizens that they could not protect them, so they should leave their homes before the thugs arrive.

Here's my thought, plow all that crap under, don't start over, don't let the rabble and human trash back in. And hope the memory of all this B.S. fades quickly.

Mind you I don't hate police, just the New Orleans cops really are a corrupt gaggle of lawless individuals, have been for years and now they are just showing their true colors.

When I was living in New Orleans, the police would stop people on the street and demand money or go to jail. When confronted by the local TV media the chief of police backed his ossifers actions by saying that they are payed poorly and they should be able to subsidize their pay check, by what ever means.

Damn them.

There was a thread here a short time back about "mass migration" after terror attack or natural disaster. I definitely need more ammo. (Leaving the bodies at the end of the drive might discourage others, though).

I really feel sorry for the people on the Gulf, already some of the poorest areas of the country, couldn't leave before hand (no car, no $, no place to go), now stuck in the heat, no food, no water, no sanitation, no body to tell them where to find ANY help. And on top of that the damned outlaws, some with badges.

Stay safe, and prepared.
Bob

All of this craziness has actually led some of my lberal acqauintances to rethink their position on gun control.

I visit a forum that is completely general discussion on a regular basis.. people are talking about buying guns, and getting bug out bags ready..

its crazy.. but in a way, Its kind of nice

Beware the migration!

Refugees from New Orleans are being bussed to Houston. Some will stay, some will go back to the Big Easy, some will move on the other places. If you live in Houston or Other Places, beware. Everything we have seen so far of the individuals who chose to stay in N.O. and now must be evacuated at taxpayer expense paints a grim picture should any of these settle in your neck of the woods. So, to keep this on topic, buy more ammo, I don't care how much you already have. Develop or increase your situational awareness as dynamics in cities will change with an influx of desperate poor who have already lost anything they might have had. What's left to lose? We already see the two mentalities emerging, the folks with beat up pickups pulling boats in trying to help and the miserable *&%#bags looting and shooting at rescuers.

about the Houston issue.. its already happening.. from another forum..

This city has no idea what it's in for right now. If you aren't prepared to protect yourself and your family you really should think about taking precautions because things are about to get really bad really quickly. If you've been watching the news you've seen that the Super dome is being evacuated to the Astrodome, that means 25,000 of the people who are out there shooting at rescue choppers and cops while looting their own city are being put on buses and sent to our city now.

They're going to arrive here at the Astrodome to find out that they won't be allowed to come and go as they please throughout the city and all hell is going to break loose. Some will leave by force and will enter our city to do the same things you've seen on tv coming out of New Orleans. While many will remain in the Astrodome they will begin to scream that they are being held against their will and it will become a racial issue. You will see "leaders" on podiums crying out to the nation that their people are people held like cattle or prisoners. There will be riots in this city and Houston will see devastation like the looting you've seen that's happening in NO.

My parents live in a small town of ~6K people about 65 miles south south/west of New Orleans, the town wasn't harmed by the storm and they still have power and water. My parents rode out the storm with me here in Houston but headed back on Tuesday after learning that the town was fine. Everything seemed fine but last night 7 people were shot while trying to break into homes, a jewelry store and a couple cars, there are people riding into town in stolen vehicles by the truck load... one of them was shot by my father who I just spoke to about all this. Another 20 or so were caught and arrested while trying to drive a stolen moving van through the front of a business. These people are fanning out in all directions right now in the state of Louisiana and some are even stealing buses to drive themselves to the Houston Astrodome, the first bus to arrive at our dome got there in less than 4 hours after the first bus left NO. After talking with these people who claimed to have come from the Super dome cops figured out that they had stolen the bus and the people had stolen/looted items on the bus and with them.

This is going to get very serious and it's not going to take a long time, please don't take this lightly.

Ruger270man you got me thinking. I’m in Houston. I have a case of 7.62 for the SKS at the APT. But I only keep three mags of .45 JHP on me (on in the gun and two on my hip…I thought two reloads was over kill till this happened) if I were to get car jacked by a gang I’d only have 24rds before I’m empty. Now I’m thinking of getting an extra mag I can stash in the truck for true SHTF stuff, and a extra box or TWO of JHP.

You guys in Johnstown can always contact me and come to my place, I got plenty of ammo...well, I will until after I shoot this weekend, so I guess I should order more today! :)

And yes, 800 feet of snow is probably a kind estimate. ;-)

All kidding aside, I try not to have too much ammo on hand. I have no grand delusion of being able to hold the fort down against an army of attackers even if I had 100k rounds of ammo. When the SHTF, my advantages will be mobility and stealth. I'm not Rambo, even Rambo isn't Rambo. I can't move around with 5000 rounds of .308 in my pack, if I have to leave, all that ammo will do only side of the argument any good, and that's not my side. It would be a tragic and painful irony to be killed by a bullet you bought after looters raided your vacated residence and found your cache of ammo and guns.

As an aside, I believe the police and Wal-mart had an understanding already. The police take what they need (chainsaws, water, food, etc) for rescue operations, and settle up accounts with Wal-mart later.

That wasn't what was going on in the footage I saw. Two female cops were in the shoe section, one was guarding a cart full of shoes while the other one was pointing out other shoe boxes to grab. The reporter asked them a couple of questions, and the one with the cart scurried off camera while the other one was obviously upset at being caught. There are other photos of cops coming out with stacks of DVD's.

Ruger270man: "... one of them was shot by my father who I just spoke to about all this."

Glad your father came out on top.

All of this has gotten me thinking as well. Even though Wisconsin would never see a hurricane, we've had some horrible snowstorms. The worst was back in the 1940's, when the National Guard had to bring in halftracks to get essential workers to their jobs. Nothing else moved.

A loss of electricity here in the winter would be as bad as what New Orleans is going through.

I'm well-stocked with .45 and .223, but I should get more 7.62.

We had a good supply of water and canned food, but it's time to replenish.

Also, I should really get a generator that will at least keep the furnace and refrigerator going.

The city of Milwaukee is probably pretty close to New Orleans in terms of poverty and crime, which means we could see the same kind of behavior up here in a disaster situation.

Actually, I feel what I really need are more magazines. I have a bunch of ammo, but I need to invest in more magazines, test them out, and load some of them up. I would hate to be having to load up magazines "on the clock" and I am sure the hordes wouldn't give me a time out if I ran out of loaded magazines. It seems to me that having a million rounds don't do you much good if you only have 2 mags. I even have 5 mags for my Remmy 710, but only 10 for my cetme. I am thinking about doubling that. I figure if I get to where I can load up a case, I should be good to go. My goal for pistols is 75 rounds or 8 mags, whichever comes first. It'll take a while to get there, but I would feel really prepared once I get there. What do you guys think?

Kj

You know I have mixed emotions about a generator. Yes they are nice, but in a SHTF having power and lights will only bring the animals to you.

Snow and ice are my concerns, I have a fireplace but now enough wood. I need to correct that. I can keep the house about 50 with that and not call attention to myself.

I think that the less visible you make yourself the better

Well, If you don't get the generator, you won't have it in an emergency (even if lawlessness does not go with it). If you do have it, you don't have to use it if it seems to make you a target.

Kj

ps- by "hordes" above I did not mean any particular group (sorry to all you mongols out there). I just meant whether home invaders, lawless mobs in an emergency, or the Klan burning a cross in my yard, I would feel better served to have at least some mags pre loaded when the fan become a scatological target.

Matt Payne and goalie.

PM me and we can all swap info. If it gets Bad we can band together if you want. I know a little spot up north thatd be pretty good. I'm a duluth resident now but i'm feeling it too. Even more since they decided to ship 5000 refugees to fort ripley, they will be there for a while but they're going to turn them loose on the state at some point.

For emergency AC power, an inverter http://www.invertersrus.com/ is a cheap investment. It won't give you as much power as a generator, like to light your whole house and keep the refrigerator and a/c going. I've got the 1250 watt version and it only cost $130.

Thanks for the tip, Lee. That looks like it might be a decent investment for us...ummmm...financially challenged folks. Have you tested yours?
