Has anyone on here just fell in love with a firearm that was completely impractical for the use which they were needing it? I was looking for a gun to use gold panning and camping. Both of which can be wet and dirty. I love stainless guns and that is usually all I will buy. It stands to reason that a stainless double action revolver would be the best choice. What do I choose. A single action revolver with a "color case blued" finish (Ruger Birds Head Vaquero .45colt). It was kind of like going out shopping for a leather jacket and coming back with silk shirt. Every since I have been making excuses to myself why I did this and almost regretted it until I finally shot it yesterday. Talk about a creme-puff. I have never shot a weapon that felt better. Pretty darn accurate and comfortable enough for a one handed shoot. My first experience with a .45colt. I think I will have to change my favorite caliber from .357mag to .45colt.

Anyone else ever do this? :)

Yup.. my AK was a bit of an impulse buy and serves no purpose for me that any of my other stuff wouldn't serve better, but I love it.

I justified the purchase by explaining to myself that I'm young, and dumb, and that's as good an excuse as any.

yep my AK-47 (wasr-10) no real use.. except for a hell of a lot of fun. my next one will be a little over kill. a few weeks I will be putting the cash down on a state arms .50 cal rebel!!! I can't wait!!!

I bought a stainless birdshead vaquero a while back. At the time I thought I was "settling" for this model, as the one I wanted wasn't available. The kid behind the counter handed it over and it just kind of melted into my hand. I've been very happy with it.

C96,
That is one sharp piece. It looks like the Umbertti I almost bought instead of the Ruger. How does it handle? I just had to go shoot my Vaquero again today. It is the best I have even felt shooting. At the full 35 yards (short range) it is no problem to keep a 3-4 inch shot grouping shooting one handed. That is with the 3.75" barrel.

The impractical gun in my safe would have to be a CZ American Magnum in 375 H&H. Read about the round since I was a child. About 20-30 rounds will pound your shoulder badly enough that you won't shoot a shoulder fired arm for a few days. But I really like it and go back for more punishment. The really impractical I haven't bought, is something like a classic double rifle in 600 nitro express. The punishment from my wife would be worse than the punishment from the recoil. But, I still look at them!

The Winchester 1895 in .405 Win... In all likelyhood, I'm never going on safari in Africa, but it's a nice rifle to have, even if I can't afford much in the way of ammunition.

My No 5 Mk1 Enfield...there are no convenient places within 30 miles that sell .303...hooray for the internet.

M1 Garand- I love this rifle but its the most inconvenient gun I have to shoot. Most surplus ammo is either corrosive, not very accurate, or too expensive. You can't buy ammo off the shelf and shoot it through the rifle without the possibility of harming the rifle. The only ammo I put through it is painstakingly put together reloads. To show the appreciation the rifle has for me and my finely crafted ammo, it chews the brass up and spits it out giving me very short brass life. I still wouldn't trade it for anything.

Yep. Bersa .380 Thunder. I have no use for this gun, except that it gives me a silly grin every time I shoot it.

Yes, a couple of times I just had a certain gun. Now that you have your sweety, you still have an excuse to buy the one you "need":) Actually, the gun will work fine for what you want.

All of my guns are impractical. I don't really need any of them-- I can't eat them, I can't love them as one would his wife or his children, none of them will grow up and do great things that would make me proud or cause my name to live forever, but that is not the point. I own my guns because I am an American, it's my right by birth to own a gun and I don't need an excuse to do it. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights is all the reason I need to own a gun. Or a dozen guns. Or a hundred guns. Take that, Sarah Brady!!

Playboy - The Thunderer shoots very well, thanks. :D

The grip is a bit smaller and to me, much more comfortable than the Ruger version.

Part of my reasoning for the purchase was me coming into several hundred rounds
of white box 45ACP and I didn't want to run it all through my 1911's. I thought
it was a good reason in any case. :)

My son liked mine so well, he bought the Ruger version this past Summer. Much
heavier and seemed blockier. He put it back on the market after a month.
He works in a gunshop so no big deal.

I recently looked at the smaller versions out there in 38 special but didn't like the
feeling or the appearance of the grips. Just a picky old bugger, I guess.

c96, glad to hear you like it. I love the Birds head grips also. This was my first experience with a .45colt and I am still amazed at how fun it is to shoot. I actually preferred the bigger heavier feel of the Ruger myself. I also preferred the Ruger action over the more colt like one. To each his own. They are both beauties. :)

Yes, no doubt, the Ruger is a much better and stronger action than the original
design. The sights aren't that special either, but it is still one of my very favorites. :D

My son was looking at replacing the grips on the Ruger to get something that had
a bit more purchase but then decided it wasn't worth the effort. Most of his gun
playing is speed steel and single action revolvers don't fare well there.

I found a box of 45LC Winchester Silver Tips and had to purchase them just because
they look pretty cool as well. But like I said, I mostly shoot 45ACP through mine
cause I'm cheap.
