After moving to central Indiana in the fall of 2000, I have yet to find a decent area to hunt during deer season.

I hike in 2 hours before sunrise with night vision. But inevitably have to leave. A number of hunters are just plain rude and stupid in the DNR public hunting areas. After signing in to a particular area and parking your car at the walk in site, some hunters still decide they want to hunt at that particular site and just walk in 10 minutes before sunup.

They are lucky enough that I verify my target before shooting, but that still doesn't mean that I haven't had the business end of my Remington pointed at them.

I have attempted to find landowners willing to allow me to hunt on their lands to the point of cold knocking on doors to solicit permission. Each one has turned me down, stating that they don't allow hunting anymore. They often cite bad hunters as the reasons for their decisions.

I am sure that there are places, publicly or privately owned, to hunt deer. Can anyone help me with finding someplace?

Down here in Southern IN I have no problem finding plenty of land to hunt on. Tons of deer too, just had a whole herd come through my property last night. Search north and east of the Evansville area.

I live in Johnson County

But I'd be willing to drive almost anywhere in the the state.

I would suggest getting a map of all of the state hunting areas. There are several small plots of state or federal land that people don't know about around here. I hunt my own land but I also hunt the Hoosier National Forrest -but I know where to go.

I run into the same problem. I'm in white county and I resort to driving 2 hours to hunt in southern Indiana. The public land is too public but its all I have. I usually have to arrive hours before dawn and smear my hunting area with orange to warn other hunter but I still get people trying to hunt too close to me or claim jumping. Good thing is there is always someone to help drag the deer on my walk out.

I have tried the going door to door thing but have been refused everytime for many different reasons such as no longer allow hunting, hate hunters, family only, and I even had one "I ain't allowing no hairbrained girl to hunt my f@&%ing land" - or something to that effect, he said more but I don't feel like typing it all out. The froth at the mouth, spittle flinging anti-hunter land owners were scarry too. I'm terrified to ask private land owners now! And, boy oh boy! My job has me driving a state truck up and down the roads next to the Wabash through the back 40's of Cass and Carrol county at dawn and dusk and I have to break at very corner for deer. Some Big ones too! And I'm terrified to ask any of those land owners.

I'd like to make friends with other hunters and go out with them and learn more because I am still just a beginner. But how is a woman supposed to go about doing that. Siddle up to a likely guy in a bar and say "hey, you like to hunt"

EatBugs,

You might end with more marriage proposals then you can shake a stick at, if not ending up being a arrested for starting a riot. ;)

Hints on where to find a place to hunt:

1. Go to a Hunter Safety Ed class and talk to the instructors, they can probably help you find someone.

2. Ranges and gun clubs. Meet other shooters and hunters, a true sportsman(person) gets enjoyment out of teaching and helping others learn about the nature and hunting.

3. I deer hunt in southern Illinois. We hunt public land, and camp in a state park. If you can put with some boorish behavior (although, never anything unsafe). you could hunt with us. The fees are a little pricey for Non-Resident in Illinois vs. resident in Indiana.

EatBugs, (what a name)
I might be able to help. If I may ask, What season you planing to hunt in and what equipment you planing on useing? My father has a place North of the Wabash in Carroll. Ussually have someone wanting to hunt it for Firearm and possablly early archery. Not garantee anything, but might see about getting something worked out.
