Human rights groups are raising alarms over a new law passed by the Iranian parliament that would require the country's Jews and Christians to wear coloured badges to identify them and other religious minorities as non-Muslims.

"This is reminiscent of the Holocaust," said Rabbi Marvin Hier, the dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. "Iran is moving closer and closer to the ideology of the Nazis."

Iranian expatriates living in Canada yesterday confirmed reports that the Iranian parliament, called the Islamic Majlis, passed a law this week setting a dress code for all Iranians, requiring them to wear almost identical "standard Islamic garments."

The law, which must still be approved by Iran's "Supreme Guide" Ali Khamenehi before being put into effect, also establishes special insignia to be worn by non-Muslims.

Iran's roughly 25,000 Jews would have to sew a yellow strip of cloth on the front of their clothes, while Christians would wear red badges and Zoroastrians would be forced to wear blue cloth.

"There's no reason to believe they won't pass this," said Rabbi Hier. "It will certainly pass unless there's some sort of international outcry over this."

Bernie Farber, the chief executive of the Canadian Jewish Congress, said he was "stunned" by the measure. "We thought this had gone the way of the dodo bird, but clearly in Iran everything old and bad is new again," he said. "It's state-sponsored religious discrimination."

Ali Behroozian, an Iranian exile living in Toronto, said the law could come into force as early as next year.

It would make religious minorities immediately identifiable and allow Muslims to avoid contact with non-Muslims.

Mr. Behroozian said it will make life even more difficult for Iran's small pockets of Jewish, Christian and other religious minorities -- the country is overwhelmingly Shi'ite Muslim. "They have all been persecuted for a while, but these new dress rules are going to make things worse for them," he said.

The new law was drafted two years ago, but was stuck in the Iranian parliament until recently when it was revived at the behest of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

A spokesman for the Iranian Embassy in Ottawa refused to comment on the measures. "This is nothing to do with anything here," said a press secretary who identified himself as Mr. Gharmani.

"We are not here to answer such questions."

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre has written to Kofi Annan, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, protesting the Iranian law and calling on the international community to bring pressure on Iran to drop the measure.

"The world should not ignore this," said Rabbi Hier. "The world ignored Hitler for many years -- he was dismissed as a demagogue, they said he'd never come to power -- and we were all wrong."

Mr. Farber said Canada and other nations should take action to isolate Mr. Ahmadinejad in light of the new law, which he called "chilling," and his previous string of anti-Semitic statements.

"There are some very frightening parallels here," he said. "It's time to start considering how we're going to deal with this person."

Mr. Ahmadinejad has repeatedly described the Holocaust as a myth and earlier this year announced Iran would host a conference to re-examine the history of the Nazis' "Final Solution."

He has caused international outrage by publicly calling for Israel to be "wiped off the map."

Iran does not yet have nuclear weapons, but Tehran believed by Western nations to be developing its own nuclear military capability, in defiance of international protocols and peace treaties.

The United States, France and Israel accuse Iran of using a civilian nuclear program to secretly build a weapon. Iran denies this, saying its program is confined to generating electricity.

All I can say is wow...

Its important that we pay attention to what goes on with this.

we don't want to be guilty of doing nothing while another holocost happens.

"Never again" is up to all of us

be vigilant

Holocosts are happening all over the world, in one form or another. Plenty of black folks are getting greased as we speak, but nobody seems to care much about that.

Where does he think Nazi's got the idea? They didn't think of it all by themselves. Iran isn't acting like a bunch of Nazi's. In fact, the Nazi's were acting like a bunch of muslims. This is the dhimmi dress codes. Iran is simply returning to its Islamic roots.

Exactally Biker, if in fact we are going to be the world police we require a much bigger military and more taxes.:banghead:

As soon as I read this in the story I thought of this;
Revelation 13:17
so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name.
This is an extreme illustration of why we have the First Amendment.

The Solution does not Lie with the US

The solution is simple: the people of Iran need to fight, and win, independence. Only then will they have a true respect for it once they earn it. Attacking the country with nuclear weapons, while it certainly sounds fun, is unlikely to be a wise approach, for a number of reasons.

Problems of this nature need to be solved from within. Only when and if Iran starts attacking other countries does anyone have any sort of justification to engage it with military force.

No military exists--regardless of how much they are misused--for the purpose of enforcing or altering the political or social beliefs and practices of a sovereign nation. Were we to suggest or approve of this use, we would in actuality be embracing a one-world government--ironically the very thing for which we often express dread and malice.

Iran? Heck we have posters who support separation from and ostracism of those who don't share the dominant belief HERE

When is the word "libertarian" actually a code word for an infantile, "I wanna do what I wanna do, so shut up!"?

When the "libertarian" objects to others' exercising their right to speech* and right to free association**.

Social ostracism does not a theocracy make.

That is one of the points the author makes, honest libertarian that he is.

* Such as public opprobrium for actions deemed outside the norms of a community.

** Such as refusing to associate with those who violate a community's norms.

All Iran is doing is making this easier by visibly labeling these folks. I mean how do people scorn atheists properly when we are not easily identifiable as such? I mean I'm a pasty white neatly groomed burly beer bellied guy in khakis and button down shirts who lives in the burbs with a neat lawn, drives a sensible sedan and has a good paying white collar job - I look about as Xian as it's possible to look. You can't know I'm an atheist, and by definition assume I'm a vicious amoral heathen plotting to destroy family values and take down all that is good and holy in polite society without some kind of visual clue surely?

This is what happens when religion and the state get too cuddly. Oh yes it's not exactly the same here and even in Iran they are not actually HURTING the infidels so it's not really a theocracy! I mean you are allowed to be a jew in Iran just like you're allowed to be an atheist in the US, and of course they'll NEVER treat you differently if you refuse to swear on a bible in court here, or wear a yellow stripe there.

Any time people want to make ANY government more centered on ANY religion, start remembering all the different interpretations of what religion means, even within supposedly shared faiths. Not just Sunnis vs. Shiites either. Is it Jack Chick or Opus Dei Xianity we want to enshrine in US government? Wanna guess where each of them thinks the other is going after they die? This is what religious governments do - they decide whose religion is approved and what happens to those who don't follow it. Government and religion never mix well. The more they mix, the worse it is for both government AND religion.

Were we to suggest or approve of this use, we would in actuality be embracing a one-world government--ironically the very thing for which we often express dread and malice.

Yes, and in the end we will fail, walk soft and carry a big stick, not sure
if that is exact quote but for me it still exist. Take care of America, be fair,
strong but stay the heck out of other countries business.:banghead:

Hm. Two sides to every story. Seems like the only people quoted in the original article - Rabbis and Iranian expats - are those with a vested interest in promulgating the "Holocaust-like" idea that Iran might possibly pass a law to implement marking non-Muslims.

Iran report of Holocaust-style badges questioned
2006-05-19 09:06:12

The National Post is sending shockwaves across the country this morning with a report that Iran's Parliament has passed a law requiring mandatory Holocaust style badges to identify Jews and Christians.
But independent reporter Meir Javdanfar, an Israeli Middle East expert who was born and raised in Tehran, says the report is false.
"It's absolutely factually incorrect," he told The New 940 Montreal.
"Nowhere in the law is there any talk of Jews and Christians having to wear different colours. I've checked it with sources both inside Iran and outside."
"The Iranian people would never stand for it. The Iranian government wouldn't be stupid enough to do it."
Political commentator and 940 Montreal host Beryl Waysman says the report is true, that the law was passed two years ago.
"Jews should wear yellow strips, Christians red strips, because according to the Iranian mullahs, if a Mulsim shakes hands with a non-Muslim he becomes unclean."

The National Post cites Iranian expatriots living in Canada as its primary source on the story.

Here's my 2 cents.

"I'm amazed that there ARE any Jews in Iran."

I was thinking that too. I'm surprised that any non-muslims would want to live in Iran. It's too dangerous a place for me.

"Their country, their rules, as disgusting as they may be."

I have to disagree. Evil wins when good men do nothing.

"Plenty of black folks are getting greased as we speak."

Where's that at? I know LA is dangerous but is it that bad:confused?

"Take care of America, be fair, strong but stay the heck out of other countries business."

They tried that in WW2. It didn't work. They realized that what happens in other countries actually does concern us. Unfortunately it took around 3000 lives & the loss of a lot of equipment for the people to understand that.

Let's jump on the anti-semitism bandwagon! Nobody else seemed to notice that they wanted christians (as I assume a majority of you are) to wear badges, too.

Not that I agree with the idea. But seriously, this smells mostly of hype and hysteria and nothing else to me.

Pretty clear message to any non-muslim with even a smidgen of history... It's time to get out while you still can!!

In five years, they will have very little. In ten years, nothing.

Oh lord......

"Plenty of black folks are getting greased as we speak."

I HOPE this is sarcasm. I know that comes across poorly in written form at times. If it ISN"T then please remember the context of "never again" is that the world will not allow an evil regime to commit genocide. Now look up the recent history of Rwanda, Somalia and the Darfur region of Sudan.

When genocide happens to dirt poor countries with no oil and no strategic military value, the world tends to say "whenever again, whatever"

I don't think it's because they are black - although to some sick buggers it may make their deaths less terrible - I think it's because nothing about their country matters to the powerful nations.

Yes this nation does care. In fact, our financial aid to the African nations is quite substantial. Go and check how much humanitarian assistance we provide. However, insofar as the USA going over there to help all I need remind you is two words: Blackhawk Down! Mogadishu was a textbook example of the types of problems such boots-on-the-ground assistance will likely be faced by any nation trying to help! While you are nevertheless right that "holocausts are happening all over the world" you cannot compare the nuclear threat that Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is wielding to other types of mini-revolts or coups the Third World nations routinely suffer, as what Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is threatening Israel with will no doubt envelope the world in a nuclear showdown with tactical and theater nuclear weapons employed.

1939 - 900 Jews attempting to flee the Nazi's were not allowed entry into the United States because "immigration quotas" were filled.

2006 - we are on the verge of granting amnesty to approximately 11,000,000 people. You will end up with 10 times that number in family carryovers.

Maybe we should offer somewhere for these people to go? Who knows, there might be an Einstein in that crowd too.
