This is a really good story! So many members post dramatic stories about "some guy gave me a dirty look in a parking lot, and I reached for my Kahr but I didn't have to use it...". So it is refreshing to finally read an actual self-defense story.

He gets all puffed up, as he does I swing my security screen door open almost hitting him as he steps back

Right away I noticed you took control of the body language and position battle. If a perp shows aggression- showing fear or retreat often encourages more aggression (like dogs). I like how you instantly moved forward to close the gap.

I being a pretty good size fella take two big steps as I bring my weapon up in his face and pull his jennys nine out of his pants and start backing him up,

I am impressed you were able to draw and disarm him at the same time. It sounds like he was in "tough-guy bluff mode" and when you turned the tables on him his world went to shambles. A lot of perps think when they show a waist-band gun it is a magic wand that makes victims surrender.

about that time my future son in law comes rolling out the door racking my mossy kept in the hall closet.

Sounds like a darn good future son in law! :)

I get the make, model, color and lic. number

Outstanding. Amazing how often people forget to do this during an incident.

the fella across the street comes out with a baseball bat asking me if I need help,

And you've got great neighbors! :D Talk about community watch.

Ok then, I took the nine and cut it up on my band saw

I'm not sure about this- but I LIKE IT. What did the cops say about this?

I'm just glad I didn't shoot him, or beat him, woulda ended up a whole lot different.

I really like the way you handled this. Disregard any of the keyboard commandos that may come along and say you should have done this or that.

I think in this situation, had you backed down or tried to run back in the house, the perp would have grown confident and more aggressive. You were proactive and neutralized the threat in a responsible manner.

Well done!

In the heat of the moment, I think you did fine. However, hindsight being 20/20, I would have called the police as soon as the guy was gone. The first one to call is often considered the victim. I also would have left the gun intact. That is your proof that he had a gun. It had his finger prints. In cutting it up, there is a chance that you would rub off the fingerprints. Plus, if that was a stolen gun, the original owner is going to be unhappy. Glad your ok.

I vote this goes down as one of the all time funniest self-defense stories!

And for the OP were those HP's? or FMJ? I am not that familiar with the weights to know off hand. And if you reload could you identify the manufacturer of the bullet(s)?

No weighing assumed they were the the wally world special, since the unit was, so either way wasn't a special round, nor a special guy. I'll send ya one if you want to be sure.Ha
thanks

So they were just normal 115 gr WWB wally world specials with a normal FMJ or plated either or.

The reason I ask is I'd be a little more skeered if they start using premium hollow points. If I have to be shot, let it be with one that does as little damange as possible.

:D:D:D

Gawd, I love the smell of testosterone in the morning.

It smells like..... chest thumping.

:D

I just spent the last half hour or so, showing my baseball bat wielding neighbor a few bang sticks, he had a long conversation with his wife who I believe is on the fence about guns, and has asked me to advise and help him learn about home protection.
Let him have a look at a few of the misc. tools I have thru-out the joint,( pistola here and there and a shotgun stashed in a few spots.(3000sq.ft home), anyway, am taking him tomorrow to the local range and run him thru a few boxes of ammo and see how he likes a pump 12 ga, and a pistola or two, for home protection, his wife has warmed up to the idea of having more than a bat around, especially as she was present when the police were here and the conversation that went on. We'll see where this goes, hope he enjoys himself, ( am taking a few light load 12ga, and a couple of 9mm, the recoil oughta be an easy go)
thanks

1) You picked good neighbors and got to know them well.
2) You raised your daughter right and she picked you a good future son-in-law.
3) You were the first one to call the cops.

You won. Preparation pays off. As for the events of that morning, it seems that you've got big brass ones.

Congratulations on the side benefit of getting to take somebody new to the range.

classy way to handle the whole thing... still not sure about the whole cutting up the gun thing... but its just the kind of sick twisted thing i like...

If the original poster were interested in chest thumping he probably would have suggested you pound sand after your first smarmy comment.

None of us knows precisely how we will react when the adrenaline hits.

Flight or fight takes over, a little Monday morning quarterbacking is to be expected but your comments are just plain rude, IMHO.

I won't bother to pick it apart piece by piece, but if you haven't seen any chest thumping in the original or subsequent postings, I don't believe you're reading.

I suppose that excuses the escalation of the situation.
but your comments are just plain rude, IMHO.
Yeah. Chest thumping brings that out in me, I admit.

Perhaps my perception is skewed by the disturbing posts I keep seeing pop up from that guy who had the 'carve them up' fantasy when he imagined someone might have stolen his dog.

This post didn't strike me as posturing.

irate

Boys the only chest thumping on my part was the adrenaline making the pump skip a beat as it happened. Ha. take a lot more than a couple words to get this ole boy started up., I'm married 35 years with four daughters, and am the oldest of 10 with all my siblings being girls also.
So my blood pressure is usually pretty calm, drama aint my style
thanks for the pros and cons, see you around

I'm sorry but I think that was the most brilliant thing I have read in a while!

I love the fact you cut up his little jennings :p. Never would have thought of that myself. Handled well and ended well, couldn't have asked for anything more!

Good news on the horizon, took the assistant (neighbor) to the range, ran a few rounds of .45,.40, 9mm, 380 down range, he fell in love with a S&W 4053 that I picked up a while back (police trade in, tactical model) kinda concerned me the way he fondled it, (ha) gonna take him and the wife out saturday am, and run a few more down range, he really likes the smith, gonna have a surprise for him on saturday, a friend has another for sale cheap, hes gonna meet us at the range, and pretty sure batboy is gonna go home with a .40, forgot how much fun it was to see a newbie pulling the trigger,
hee haw, another on the fence anti shoved off.

I thought you said "assailant" at first...in which case I'd question not only his sanity, but yours!

"Sorry for cutting up your gun, try out this S&W instead. And don't let anyone disarm you like I did!"

Sounds like the guy got more than he bargained for. Nice work. I wouldn't have cut up the gun. Disassembled maybe, but not cut up. That was pretty funny, though. To be perfectly honest, by cutting it up, you might have saved his life, his hand at least. :D

:barf:

Not to rain on everyones parade, but why didn't you call the cops on him at the time? Trespassing, attempted assualt, brandishing so on and so on. You could have held him where he was.

I don't get the cut up gun part, except to be mean.

I would be asking the question

  1. Why did he not return the calls if he wanted the part?
  2. Why did he get irrate?
  3. Why did he bring a gun

The conclusion is that he meant to rob you. Plain and simple. So I can't fault the way it turned out. I don't understand a lot of your actions though. Nice to know that you had support from your neighbors.

BTW, I happen to be a fan of Byrco, Lorcin, Jennings, Jiminez. They honestly are not bad weapons and folks who talk smack about them have never owned one.
