Is the Iraqi Army being equipped with AK 47s or AK 74s???

I thought the 7.62 was considered obsolete by the Russians, Chinese, and most other armies using the AK.

Why would the Iraqis decide to equip themselves with new obsolete weapons?

I realize this is unrelated (to every one except Bush anyway), but I have read that Osama's AK that he is pictured with in his videos is the 5.45 version.

Perhaps it's the cost of transitioning to the newer weapon or that they have vast supplies of 7.62x39 to shoot up. The way they neglect the sights and ''spray and pray" I would suspect the latter!

If they have vast supplies of 7.62 why then is availability of the stuff in the civilian market pretty much gone, with Wolf saying they have new orders to fill from Iraq?

Maybe surplus weapons they have, but not surplus ammo.

I would guess thats what they used before and thats what there sticking with now.

7.62 was obsolete against post 70's personal body armour. This drove the change to 5.56 and 5.45.

So why are the Iraqis using 7.62?? Right now the problem is the terrorists. Are the entire terrorists organizations being armed with personal body armour? So members may be, but certainly not the rank and file expendable types.

Um...I think rifle rated armor plates that were worn by soldiers only became avaiable in the 80's...at least to a decent degree. And an 7.62x39 should easily penetrate IIIA armor. I'd gladly eat crow if wrong...but I'm stating what I know for fact.

Just about any rifle can, including, yes, any AK series chambered in 7.62x39mm. III is another story, but neither 5.45x39mm nor 5.56x45mm nor 7.62x39mm nor even 7.62x51mm can.

According to this statement:
7.62 was obsolete against post 70's personal body armour.
there have been thousands of flukes over in the sand box.

One would think that Wolf gets more money by selling their ammo to the US then by selling it to a third world country.

It's all about volume and long term contracts.

A few million rounds of finicky US purchasers in a fluctuating market against a US backed guaranteed contract for God knows how many million rounds.

I'd pick the safe bet too......

plus correct me if i'm wrong but isn't wolf an IMPORTER and not a manufacturer of ammo (meaning they bring it to teh states not make it). thus wolf would be short based on their "source company" getting the ammo contract not wolf.

wolf .22lr comes from i beleive germany (and has a good rep), where as their well known steel case centerfire ammo, up to now, has come from russian (or at least former soviet) sources. and now they're bringing in another line (wolf gold ??) made by Privi Partisan (serbian??). somehow i don't think they actually OWN the plants.

While I was in the sandbox the Iraqi army had ak-47 in good ole 7.62 now that was about 7 months ago, unless they have changed since then but I highly doubt it! I saw very few ak-74's while there, mostly ak-47's, rpg's, sks's, rpk's, pk's and the occasional romanian psl rifle, a few mausers and as far as pistols there was glock 19's which the IP's had, s&w 99's which the ING officers had and a horrible knock off of a 1911 which almsot every body else had!

Are the entire terrorists organizations being armed with personal body armour?
the only insurgents that I saw with body armor was the ones working for the IP's by day and badguys by night, but their body armor left alot to be desired!
