is it odd for a 1858 repro to not have a manufacturers date code anywhere on it? I bought the gun used, its a richland arms "made by palmetto? and the only proofmarks i can find are the pn with star symbol, and the 2 rifles crossed with star on top, other than that there is a four digit number (which i assume to be the serial number) and a 2 number code of 47 under loading lever and on frame under grip. Does it have to be there somewhere or was date code stamping a litle lax on some of the cheaper guns? thanks.

I've seen Italian Kit Guns without date codes
I have two CVA .31 Wells Fargoes with NO date codes OR proofs.
frame of of one was stamped with the CVA logo between the hammer and trigger screws on the right side, "Connecticut Valley Arms Inc." on the barrel top flat, and "A.S.M-BLACK POWDER ONLY MADE IN ITALY" on the barrel bottom flat.
Frame bottom is stamped 786XX. it came from a gun show, in filthy condition and rough shape, for $25 about three years ago...and now it's pretty and ready to go make some smoke
the other is completely unmarked except 681XX on the frame bottom. I aquired this one new at retail as a CVA kit in late '85.
I'm puzzled as to NO Gardone markings. Hopefully, these brass frames weren't
sourced from India or Pakistan....

Kits generally did not have proof marks or manufacture dates. Some had no markings at all.

If you don't like the blue on it take it off. Soak the gun in vinegar to give it that in the white look. Just a suggestion though.
smokepole, ive already did that. I had just been reading this forum for a few days when i saw some post regarding that, I stripped it in vinegar to redo it but then i liked it better un-blued, so i took the mothers polish to it and i think it looks great. ( well as great as it can, the metal work is pretty shotty). i also stripped and restained the grips, its amazing how much better the gun looks now. after i stripped it though theres one place on the barrel thats almost white and doesnt match the rest of the gun, " which is a polished reflective metal" ive polished like hell and cant get that white-ish spot to blend any suggestions?

Johnjon I've never done the process before, so I really don't have an answer for that. However im sure there is someone on this forum that can help you. I've just seen it done before and thought it looked nice. Is the white spot just not polishing?
