jhp or sjsp for hunting?

in trying to decide weather to use 240gr 44 hornady xtp jacketed hollow points or winchester 240gr semi jacketed soft point. im looking for a bullet that will work well for a wider range of speeds. i will be using them in a handgun and a rifle

I know the XTP penetrates. Don't know much about the Winchester.

I am currently using federal Fusion it works very well. All of the 240gr hollow points I have used lost the jacket too quickly for my liking, the Fusion held together and gave total penetration on white tail and would be good on black bear too. I don't handload yet so over the counter is all I know about. A cast lead SWC also is a great round in a .44

Either one should work fine.

I use Montana Gold JHPs for deer hunting with my .44 revolver.

I use 240 grn xtps on deer and bear. 4 deer last year longest shot was 94 yards confirmed with a laser range finder. that was also the only one requiring a second shot.

I have taken deer with both bullets and prefer the XTP.

The last deer I shot with the SJSP was hit right behind the shoulder around 45-50 yards. The bullet acted much like a FMJ. It went right through both lungs and out the other side. Sounds good huh? Well, there was no expansion and very little terminal damage. It really was a clean, pass through hole. The deer ran about 150 yards and piled up, leaving a very little blood trail.

The deer I have taken with the XTP have all ran less than 30 yards, if they didn't drop on the spot. All of the XTP's have had nice terminal damage and exited. They seem to be a better "deer" bullet than the SJSP in my opinion. The performance has been good and the XTP's have not let me down.

the main thing im worried about is over expantion, and the bullet fragmenting and not doing its job. i will be pushing them around 1800fps from my rifle. im just a little concerned about hollow points because 2 years ago while muzzleloader hunting a buck chased a doe right behind my stand and i shot him from probably 5 or 6 yards, i was using a 295gr powerbelt bullet and it bursted into a million small pieces when it hit the deer, i did see the deer go down, but needless to say i discontinued the use of those bullets. Well there's your problem right there!

While 1800fps is at the upper end of the spectrum for the XTP, the XTP is in a totally different class of bullet than the Powerbelt. Powerbelts are extremely soft, copper plated bullets with a huge hollow point. They are well-known for coming apart.
