Keeping Caps on the nipple

A good .44 will knock a man clean off of his feet and all the way across the room, especially if the ball hit's a large bone. He'll stop and fall to the floor when he hit's up against the wall.

That's just BS! If it did that, the shooter would also be knocked over. It will stop an attack and is certainly deadly, but what YOU describe is pure HOLLYWOOD!

You know what I meant. I didn't mean he would fly through the air like a baseball. You just want to argue. I don't want to. I know what I know and evidently you don't know anything. I think I will sign off for a few weeks. I get so tired of people like you....No, on second thought I think I'll stay signed on even more just because I know there are so many people who don't like me telling the truth....

OK, Gentleman,

What you've described is a theory. What was the reality? Did they survive the shooting? What was the extent of injuries?

Thanks in advance.

Uhmm...physics or no physics I would not want to be shot anywhere on my person with a .44 anything. 600,000 men died in the Civil War (not war of Northern aggression) with weapons like that...I doubt they knew anything about the physics of the situation.

home depot sells some thin wall vinyl pliable tubing. they have some small enough you can cut it and slip it over the cap. helps keep it on. an inch of tubing will do a cylinder full.

I carry mine cocked, loaded, and capped. With my finger on the trigger at that. Just kidding. My new Rem New Army gets carried with 6 loaded chambers and the hammer resting on the safety notch. My Pedersoli Howdah Pistol (the most fun you can have with your clothes on) gets carried without a cap on the nipple, purely because #11 caps have a tendency to fall off, necessitating recapping. Hate to waste caps. CCI #10 caps fit better, but I have precious few of those.
The New Army gets carried in a flap holster with the flap closed and buttoned. It's the only holster I have that fits it. It is NOT going to jump out of that holster, and cock/fire itself. It threatened to do that but I told it I would introduce it to my friend Mr Oxy/Acetylene, if it did. It's been on it's best behavior since.

GOC, damn dude, I like you.
I'm avoiding jumping into this urinating competition because I'm trying to avoid getting banned from another forum.

Hi there Jaymo.. No, don't get into a 'urinating contest' on here. Not worth it and you can't win anyway..I know for an absolute fact that all the things I have ever typed on this site is the truth. If people don't want to believe me I don't care and when I know for a fact that I know what I know then I'm not going to waste my time arguing and trying to reason with a bunch of fools and ass*****...I went hunting for a day and night. Just got in and caught up on a few hours sleep. I was with two Crow Indians. We went looking for meat for them and a couple of old women and a little of it for me. We found a lot. Didn't take more than we needed, just enough to have plenty. Mostly deer, and we stopped by while it was still dark and cool and got a few fat Rattlesnakes before the sun drove them to cover. Big fat heavy ones to. They don't fool with them much so they gave all of them to me. We were on horseback. (Three of their ponies and two more to help with packing the meat out)..I just took 2 livers and two stomachs because I knew those Rattlers would use up about all of my available freezer space. Okay, talk with you later. Glad you are liking the '58..Did your 5.5 incher get there yet? Have a good day or night or whatever there Mr. Jaymo..GOTC....

I thought the Crow Reservation is in Montana....not Wyoming.
If on the Reservation...what did it cost for a hunting license? Was it expensive?

Bluehawk..Kiowa are mostly South Wyoming although they're scattered here and there all over Wyoming. Crow and Sioux are mostly Montana and Sioux very seldom come far over the line. They seldom even go into town there unless they just have to. Sheriff's deputies and so forth are alway's messing with them..Lot's of Crow in Wyoming if you counted all of them. I have no real idea how many. Wasn't on the reservation. The only 2 times I ever hunted on a reservation was with the Sioux there at Great Falls Montana..It didn't cost me anything. The first time I was active duty USMC and Randall Ben Randall whom I served with in 3rd Force Recon in WesPac extended me an invitation to visit him and his family. The second time I was a full duty Federal Officer and it cost me $.20..(Twenty cents)..(Being a partially disabled veteran does have it's benefits)....

Yes, it arrived. I had to search for my caps this weekend. I put them up so they wouldn't get lost. Then I forgot where I put them.
I actually had to do a little bit of stoning to remove some burrs on the bolt. I need to do a tiny bit of stoning of the hand, too. It's rotating the cylinder a hair too far.
Not bad enough for me to send it back to Cabela's. Especially since everything else about the revolver is so nice. I've seen plenty of new centerfire revolvers that needed action work right out of the box(S&W and Charter Arms) that cost a lot more than this Pietta.
Something I like a lot about it is the fact that I can buy replacement lockwork and such from Cabela's and DGW. As long as I take care of it, I can rebuild it many times over, if needed.
I do think the hammer may warrant me case hardening it again. Seems a tad soft.
Once again, not a problem. I have camp stoves, gasoline blow torches, propane torch and OA torch, plus a can of Kasenit,
First, I'll shoot it a bit and see.
I picked up 24 pounds of pure lead from the scrap yard yesterday. I should be able to cast many balls and conicals for my frontstuffers with that.

Bluehawk..Let me be a little more clear if I can. I THINK the Kiowa's have a big reservation down in North Texas or over the line somewhere in Oklahoma. I've never been in Oklahoma that I know of and the only thing I know about it is that an Indian cannot go into a bar and drink, at least up until a few years ago anyway. Don't know if they changed the law in the last 7 or 8 years or not..I THINK the Crow have a big assed reservation somewhere around Billings Montana. I think the land was deeded to them and is now their homeland and no one can take it away from them, (again)..Truthfully I'm not sure if Oklahoma even has a reservation of any kind. There's not a whole lot of Indians in Wyoming period. Hell, not many people of any kind here and I like it that way. I like Indians. I have a few friends scattered here and there. Sioux, Crow, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Commanches, and even one Yaqui and his family..PS..Almost forgot my Apache buddy and his wife and children down in the White Mountain region..PS again..I THINK Randall Ben Randall is the right name for my Sioux friend. That MIGHT be the name of my Apache friend. One thing I know for sure. Both of them are damned good people and they're just like me. They might get a name mixed up but if we met tomorrow we would know each other....

GOC. For 38 years I had a very dear friend who was 1\2 Sioux. We worked at the same place for almost 20 of it and we had a hell of a good time. He was married and had two kids when I met him and I watched his children grow up. I was 6 years younger than him. We worked, partied, and lived life. Eventually I got married and had kids too. One day when my kids were around 10 years old he came over and gave them each an eagle claw. They still have them and I have told them the significance of them. Unfortunately, he passed away a couple of years ago, but at least we remember the good times. And yes we went shooting together.

Gaucho.. Sorry for the passing on of your friend. God know's I'vd lost a few to..Hey, do you ever shoot that little .31 much? You must really have a big gun case. If you stock what I would refer to as an 'adequate' amount of ammunition for all of those different kinds of guns you sure need a lot of room! Had a Western Field single shot 16 guage one time. So many years ago. I believe I bought it at a 'Montgomery Wards' store..(Monkey Wards)..It sure was a good rabbit gun. I don't even know if they have those stores or not anymore. I gave the 16 to my son when he turned 16. I think he might still have it. He's way way the hell back there in Alaska. That's where he lives so needless to say I don't see him much anymore. Anyway, Gaucho, my regret for the passing of your friend....

Funny thing, CCI #11 caps work in my Cabelas capper, but they fall off the nipples of my Pietta Remington New Army.
Remington #10 caps are a tiny bit too long for the capper, but they don't fall off the nipples.
I don't distrust the sizing info given here. I think it has something to do with the shape/taper of the cap/nipple.
I could have sworn the CCI #11 fell off the nipples of the Howdah, but they wouldn't do so yesterday when I tried them again.
It still doesn't make any sense that the larger diameter Remington #10 caps fit tighter than the smaller diameter CCI #11 caps. Must be something to do with the taper of the caps/nipples.:scrutiny:

Jaymo,
You are right that the taper of the nipple has a lot to do with which cap will stay on. The Rem#10 is the same diameter as the Rem#11 but it is longer and therefore will fit a smaller, less tapered nipple. The CCI#11 is smaller in diameter but is shorter and therefore the walls of the cap don't grab the sides of the nipple. One thing the Remington#10 cap has as an advantage is its walls are thinner and pre-split. i.e. they will flare out as the cap is seated whereas the thicker walled CCI and RWS caps are thicker walled, unslit and harder to flare when seated. The RWS and CCIs need a real hard push to get the priming compound down against the nipple. Half of my many C&S will take the CCI#11s and the other half will take the RWS#1075 but ALL of them will take the Rem#10 or I will replace the nipples with the stainless replacement nipples that take the Rem#10.

Always just capped the gun when I reached my stand. With my flint guns however, I'll prime the pan, and put the hammer stall on. It takes no time to remove it when it's time to shoot.

Keeping Cap ON

Been doing this for many years and it works for me.

With a musket cap rifle, place the cap on the nipple with hammer at full cock, then place an empty 45ACP case over the nipple/cap and lower the hammer to hold the empty pistol brass in place.

This acts as a safety and keeps the rain/snow off the cap. When it comes time to shoot the game animal, just cock the piece and shoot. With a little practice, the empty brass will fall off as you cock the rifle.

With #10/11 caps, use a empty 9mm brass for the same purpose.

Here are two pictures of my rifle with the 45ACP brass (aluminum in this instance) from my elk/deer hunt in Santiam/McKenzie hunting units of Oregon.

Dave

Oh, I'm not confused about it sir. Oh, I remember how many. Yes indeed. I just figure that's mine and my God's business, not yours. I say again for absolute clarification here. A good hot loaded 1858 .44 will knock a man (a big man to) piss winding across the room. Forget your phony movies. Just take my word for it. And a good hot loaded Walker? Anybody that has the sense God gave a pissant shouldn't even have to wonder about that..You have a good night sir, you hear?....

the Winchester 500 bolt action with the 80x scope on it

Win 500 I've never heard of except for the air rifle...can ya direct me to a place with specs on it?
80x scope??????????

let's not forget the M29 frags I had to throw a couple of times

The M29 grenade was a practice rifle grenade for the M30 AT grenade...nobody throws those...ever!
In Vietnam the WWII MkII (pineapple)...the M26 (lemon)...M61 (lemon)...and the M67 (baseball) hand thrown frag grenades were the only ones I ever knew that we used.

BlueHawk, M29 Fragmentation Hand Grenade. Killing radius 15 meters, casualty radius 30 meters. Are you going to be yet another that I must hold in utter contempt?....Never saw the old pineapple or the new (at that time) baseball the entire time I spent there....

I simply pointed out your nomenclature for these weapons is incorrect...the M29 is a rifle practice grenade..period!
See description from TM 43-0001-29 in the attachment.
If you have a pic with info showing differently please supply it.

This thread could be quite funny. We can all make wild and excessive claims and since its the internet ~ who will ever know (yea, right).

Hate to get off topic on a thread, but couldn't resist on this one.
