I have a new Kimber 1911 .45. Once the slide is fully back it is very difficult to release it with the slide stop lever (i.e. the slide stop lever does not depress). Any suggestions?

It's called a slide "stop" for a reason. That's its primary purpose. Most folks prefer the slingshot method of grabbing the top of the slide and pulling it back a bit to release the pressure caused by the slide stop. I have a Kimber 45, too and had the same problem until I shot it some. But I'm not really concerned about it because I don't release the slide that way.

The slidestop has five functions.

It's a slide stop to keep the slide from flying off the end of the frame.

It's a slide lock that holds the slide open when the magazine is empty.

It's a slide release to load the top round in a loaded magazine from slidelock.
It stands out from the frame and has a textured surface for a reason.

It's a barrel cam that, in conjunction with the lower lug, forces the barrel up into the slide.

It's an anchor for the link so that the barrel can be pulled out of the slide.

Pretty good for one simple little part, no?

And...

The problem has been solved.
