.44 Special snub, S&W 296. Packs a good punch!
Featured with Hogue grips and Buffalo Bore 200 grain hardcast wadcutters, but currently using the OEM Unce Mike's rubber grips and Corbon 200 grain DPX TAC-XP copper hollowpoints.

I really enjoy carrying my SS Taurus 431 3" 44 special. Loaded with Underwood's 200gr Gold Dot it makes a very reliable, compact CCW.

I would be inclined to try out a lightweight Taurus (415 or similar) in 41 or 44 mag and then shoot the lower powered stuff from either. This is about the only revolver they make that I would be willing to "try out" and take my lumps.

Large bore snubby? Here's an old Charter Arms Bulldog that has been shortened to 2 inches. It may not be as pretty as some others on here but with a 300 gr slug, it means business.

I used to own a 1917 S&W, that I got in trade from a friend, who had the original gun altered by bobbing the hammer, and cutting the barrel to 3". It was some bad gun, but I got tired of lugging it around, with 6 .45ACP, which made it VERY HEAVY ! I refuse to reveal what gun I traded it for ! :banghead:

Back before S&W and the other factories saw the light and got into the big bore snubby game your choices were very limited. Charter Arms was a pioneer with 3" Bulldog .44spl, which came out in '73 or '74. However, if you wanted something more robust you had to go to someone like Austin Behlert or the Jovino shop and have one built. They were cutting down N-frames and round butting the grip frames (among other mods) to meet the need for a powerful, concealable revolver. Interestingly, Mag-na-port still offers similar snubby conversions on large frame, big bore revolvers today.
This gun is an Austin Behlert customized S&W 25-2 .45ACP revolver, the finish is Armoloy hard chrome-
If you needed big bore pocket power back when .38s ruled the snubby roost, Mag-na-port offered a custom Charter Arms Bulldog .44spl called the "BackPacker". They built 250 of them in the late '70s, mine is number 128-

All of these are great guns guys! silicosys4, Ive been looking for an astra .44 for awhile now, whats the price they go for?
S&W N-frames are just a bit too big for me to be able to reach the trigger when shooting in DA mode. Shooting N-fames with a compromised "h" grip in the 1980s is probably largely responsible for my right wrist becoming increasingly crippled today. Now that my centerfire shooting is mostly done as a lefty these days, my big bore snubby is a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan, with an original-style GP100 grip, a configuration which allows me to shoot DA with a properly-centered grip.

I've carried a Kimber 1911 Ultra Carry for several years and was very happy with it. It was easy to conceal in the holster I used and a great gun to shoot. In July of this year I got a used S&W 386 PD because I liked short barrel revolvers in 357 Mag, already had a S&W Model 19 with a 2.5" barrel that I was thinking about using for my daily concealed carry gun. I fell in love with the 386PD as soon as I shot it, it is so light weight that you don't know it is in the holster. I think it is the best 'carry gun' I have ever used. I saw another one at our local gun show last weekend, it's the only one I've seen for sale, ever. I wanted to buy it for my wife, but was too cheap to spend the $770 the owner wanted for it. I also for a Taurus 627 that is very light weight and would work well for concealed carry if it didn't have a 4" barrel. My S&W 610 would be a caliber I would prefer, but the gun is too heavy to be a good concealed carry gun and I just couldn't cut the barrel down to 2.5" and live with myself.

I traded into mine for a zasteva ez9 And 4 mags I was into for $375 or so if I remember right. The former owner paid $550 I think.

Very specialised revolvers for special tasks! They won;t do for everyone but the guy who needs one really needs it!
Recoil and muzzleblast must be abusive as hell but like I said thes are special purpose guns.
Funny how Colt addressed the problem WAAAAY back with the "Thunderer"! and Shopkeeper!
Hauling long barreled BP revolvers around mase me very aware of big OAL and holstering considerations.

I don't currently own a big-bore snubby, but based on the ones I've shot, they are not bad.
Typical large bore SD rounds like .45acp and .44spl have relatively low pressures so they tend not to be quite as abusive to the shooter as one might expect. They also have the oft described "push" rather than a "kick" to their recoil.
Now, load up with a .44 magnum, or a "ruger only" .45LC load and it could be a different story.

Been out of production for about 10 years, but you still find 'em around.
Nothing like having 45 Colt as a pocket carry!

I do like the Smith snubbies but like my SP101 a lot too.
My favorite handgun of all time, my 3 1/4" chopped barrel S&W Model 25-2 started life in 1980 as a .45ACP 6" target revolver. I carried it concealed last weekend . . . and I love it when I can have my favorite handgun with me! This thing is incredible . . . the best trigger (single and double action I've ever experienced, radically narrowed, rounded and smoothed trigger for double action work, sharpened edged front sight for self defense situations, and more), and I can reload those moonclips as fast as I can reload my Colt 1911 limited auto!
