possibly...

CNBC is reporting that due to battery usage in China - especially on E-Bikes (battery motorcycles) that lead could skyrocket even further!

It's been going up at an alarming rate for about the past two years. In one two week period, it went up about 30%. Without a doubt, anything made from lead is going to become more expensive.

It's become almost impossible to get old tire weights in my area anymore. Exide Battery Company is buying it all up and the tire shops won't sell to individuals.

Hope this helps.

I have a chance to buy 140lbs of lead for around $20. Is that a good buy?

I don't cast my own, but maybe I can find someone to cast me some 45acp 230g bullets?

Yes, but I'm better off with about 1,500 pounds, but I'm afraid it won't last forever, even with picking up what I can at the range. Lead is going to become hard to get because of the demand, and the fact that the State of California declared it a Toxic Substance, so some recyclers won't handle it at all.

elkhuntingfool.
sure thing. i've got a lee 230gr round nose 6 cavity I could make you some if you would like.

$20 for 140 lbs of lead is a pretty good deal, depending on what alloy it is. Note that most scrapyards are in the 50 - 60 cent range for lead. Wheel weights are harder, which is good for 45acp.

Note that it costs about $10 to ship 60 lbs of lead through the post office, you may be better off just collecting lead, melting it into ingots and selling it locally (or even here).... for about $20 plus shipping for 60 lbs. You stand to make about $25 on your 140lb bucket that way.

$25 = 1000 primers. ;)

the reason lead is so high is 'cause china is using so much making toys!!:cuss:

I wonder how long we will be able keep using it? Kaliforinia is banning it AZ looks like to be next.

Can you cast solid copper bullets?

brasskeeper

i am worried 'bout that, too. i wonder what the EPA will do when they find out i have over 15 years worth of lead bullets in my berm on my personal shootin' range. prolly several thosand pounds of the stuff.

bdhawk,

The EPA doesn't have jurisdiction over private shooting ranges, on private property, for personal use. The state may take another view, but that's the official Federal EPA position. I deal with them over range and lead issues, and as long as you use some common sense, they're not bad to deal with at all. The state can be another matter, though we're trying to educate them...

As for the lead itself, you can reclaim it, and either sell it or cast it into bullets.

Hope this helps.

well i dont know about you guys but im buying as much lead as i can. i have about 50 lbs now. and i have ordered another 110lbs

some folks stored tanks of water and stocked up on canned goods for 1/1/2000...I'd put your money into growth stock mutual funds so you'll be able to put gas in your car.

Wheel weights are very difficult to get around here. You almost have to be a personl friend or relative of the local tire shop managers.

On a side note. I have several hundred pounds of pure lead that came from an exray room that was remodeled. I was wonder if anyone uses pure lead for .45 ACP bullet casting?

I have 100 + LB's of ingots from when I used to cast. I will continue to hold on to them.

Souns pretty cool! Maybe there is even a Tactical application for X-Ray room lead bullets. Think about it... If they glow green, you would never lose them at night and they could be considered "KoolTracer" ammo...
...And, if you hit Bad Guy with hem, they have to worry about Radiation Poisoning as well as bleeding to death, major trauma and lead poisoning...
Can you say Mall Ninja?
