Does anyone have a MOA or inch@100yards number for what a Duplex reticle on a Leupold covers? this perticular scope is a 3-9 x 50mm VariX -IIc.

I want to use it as a rough range estimation tool, for my first hunt this winter!

Thanks.

I don't have my catalog with me right now but that info is all on the Subtensions pg. Most of the Leup. that have the RES system use a "thin opening" subtension (plex post tip to plex post tip) of 5.4 inch per hundred yds. @ the optic's highest power. I use a modification of the mil-ranging formula and just apply the plex reticles for rangefinding just like a 3 point mil-dot (2 units of subtension). Here's the mil-ranging formula in it's most basic form (inches to yds.)--

tgt. size (") x range of reticle subtension measurement (usually 100 yds.) / reticle subtension (") / "mil-reading" (decimal equivalent) = range in yds.

Example-- 10" tgt. that occupies 9 tenths (0.9) of the 2.7 IPHY x-hair to plex post tip gap--

10 x 100 / 2.7 / 0.9 = 410 yds.

If it occupies 8 tenths (0.8) then it's

370.3/0.8= 460

Here's how my dope would look taped to my gun somewhere
X-P (x-hair to plex post tip)

1.5P-250 (P= point blank range)
1.4-265
1.3-285
1.2-310
1.1-335
1.0-370
.9-410
.8-460
etc. to about 500 yds. max. (for me)

...see how it works? This is faster more accurate, and more flexible than the RES Leupold uses.

I would also calculate a point blank power to adjust my scope to in case u get a close shot but aren't quite sure if the animal is within PBR or not. If interested let me know and i can explain that.

Just looked at my catalog and it says the std. Duplex in that optic measures 6.2 IPHY between post tips.

sscoyote,
thank you for your help. Luppy replied to my emails and sent the following:

The fine duplex reticle on that scope will subtend 16in on low and 5.5 on high at 100yds.

I would have thought it would have been more like 23 inches at 100 yards, due to the measuring I did at ~10 yards. I need to go back and re check.

Thank you for your help I think I will work out the distance ranges and tape a card to my stock too!
