Jim knows more about the current crop of "Lightning" repos than I. If you anticipate putting a bunch of rounds through it, I'd keep his advice in mind.
As far as suitablility for the task goes, I don't see where it would be any less effective than an LA in the same caliber if it exhibits the same level of functional reliability in actual use. FWIW, most folks seem to be able to deliver aimed rounds in somewhat faster succession with a pump. I know that I can with my cherished IMI Timberwolf .357 carbine compared to my Rossi '92 clones.
Personally, I don't care for the idea of a pump action anything without a disconnector in the mechanism. There are just too many ways for things to get ugly without one, not the least of which are ND/ADs and out-of-battery discharges. Either can ruin your whole day, not to mention sundry body parts.
I'm a big fan of carbines chambered for revolver cartridges for HD, especially for folks who are unable or unwilling to put forth the not-inconsiderable time and effort necessary to become proficient with a sidearm.
Almost anyone can learn to get effective hits at short-to-intermediate ranges with a carbine faster and more easily than with a handgun delivering similar power. FWIW, that's why we got the .30 M1 carbine as the replacement for the 1911 and revolvers issued to support troops in WW II. They can also retain more of that potential effectiveness in the absence of frequent practice/training sessions than with any handgun.
As a companion to a revolver in the same chambering, it's just as practical and usefull an idea today as it was in the mid-1870's for maximum utility with the minimum investment. Hey, I may be wrong, but I'm not uncertain!
