Looking at 1911's

I'd advise against a used gun as a first 1911. It is worth the peace of mind to not have to worry about what a previous owner had done to it.

While only Colt makes a Commander, the term is generally accepted to generically refer to the size of the gun...which would be a 4.25" 1911...so Springfield Armory does not make a Commander sized 1911; neither does Kimber.

With your stated price line, I'd also recommend something from the Philippines. My two favorite Filipino 1911s are the Rock Island Armory Tactical and the STI Spartan

Ok I found another lgs that has a Springfield Range officer for 735. What is the going rate for these?

I bought my first 1911 about a year ago. It is a Remington R1S, and after taking it to the range several times, I have no desire to look at any other 1911's. It is accurate, consistant, and feels great in my hand. It's not a commander size, but never the less, it is a terriffic 1911.
