I have searched several forums and did not find what I was looking for, or maybe chose to ignore it. I am an old far--guy with hearing loss, wear hearing aids etc. One of the main joys I get/got when shooting is hearing the "pling" noise when I hit the metal target. But wearing rubber plugs and muffs stops me from hearing the "pling". Would a set of electronic muffs with a NRR rating of 31, worn over my hearing aids enable me to hear the "pling" and still protect what hearing I have left? Or I could try without hearing aids in and hope amplification would be enough. Any input would be appreciated. I am virtually a fulltime caretaker for my invalid wife and can't get out to experiment as I use too. TIA

I shoot silhouettes with about 30 other geezers on a weekly basis, many of them have hearing aids and everyone wears muffs or plugs, some are electronic. Almost everyone says they can hear the "clank" of a ram being hit at 100 meters but not falling over. Do you have a friend or acquaintance that might let you try his?

I shoot with a bunch of old farts as well; many between the ages of 55 and
70, with one being really close to 80. All sorts of hearing protection is worn
by these guy's; but many report hearing the "thump" of the bullet striking
the metal plate targets at the FOP range. FWIW, I use the electronic muffs
that drown out gunfire; but let normal conversation be heard. ;) :D

I've got a top of the line set of Peltor electronic muffs and it works great at deadening the bang but playing/amplifying everything else. I cannot hear the plang from hitting a steel target though.

Thanks for your replies. I think I will buy the electronic muffs and try them out next time I get out shooting. I will try them first without my hearing aids in and see how that works. Really like hearing that pling/clang. Thanks again.

at the range in Oklahoma I used to shoot at, I liked shooting the 200 meter steel targets, because the report noise would be (mostly) gone by the time the clang noise got back to the firing line. :)
