M-1 Carbine

I am interested in buying another M-1 rifle for a shooter. Any one have experience with the James River Armory re-builds ? Also which is better a KHAR Arms newly made or a Universal ? Have read very little complimentry on the latter. thanks guys

I have heard both good and bad about universal. I think they had a period of good, followed by a period of dangerous.

I would save up for a mixmaster tried and tested M1. Don't bother with the imitations.

I agree with the other suggestions about going for USGI instead. Years ago I bought an Iver Johnson M1 Carbine and it was okay. The trigger housing (around the magazine well) broke due to it being made of cheap metals. I now have a USGI M1 Carbine (Inland) that was passed down from my father-in-law. The difference in quality between the USGI and Iver Johnson is staggering.

I would look for a deal above all, but in order of what I feel are values, I like usgi first, then an early iver johnson, then a newer kahr, than an older iver johnson, then an early kahr, then a universal.

I have an early Plainfield that never falters, I also have a Saginaw Gear that's a winner. Just my 2 cents.

The USGI options are the best bet but of late their price makes them what I consider a bad value. I haven't seen many going for less than $1000 of late. Many are shot out and not much of a "shooter" choice. If you find one that has a good barrel and is at a price you can justify, grab the USGI first. I had pretty good results with a Plainfield. It wasn't as well built as the USGI options but it was also bought for under $200. Universal would be my last pick but if you can inspect and better yet, test fire one I'd be for it at the right price.

I snagged a Rock-Ola mixmaster off the CMP forums for $800. The barrel has been counter-bored, but it still shoots good enough for plinking. Ringing an 8" plate at 100 yds isn't too difficult with it.

Yesterday, I saw three USGI carbines at the Crossroads of the West Show in Reno NV.

They were all in at least "very good" external condition, and the highest ASKING price was $700. To me, this implies that it may have been possible to work a bit of a deal for a lower tariff.

The Auto Ordnance/Kahr carbines I've seen are quite respectable rifles, but I too would prefer a good GI Carbine for first choice.

Try to find a USGI

I recently found an imported Inland for $550. It has lots of non-USGI parts including slide and stock. Rifling is visible but not much of it left. Receiver and barrel match. I bought it to have some fun with, not as a target rifle or to hunt with. If I had not found this I would have a James River or Fulton right now. Just be aware that AO is not USGI or anywhere even close. Probably just fine for burning powder. Unless you reload you probably won't be able to afford to shoot it much anyway at 0.40 a round.

I got a rebuilt mix-master that had been reparkerized and all springs replaced by a reputable gunsmith for about $800. Shoots wonderfully. I sold my very accurate but very finicky Auto-Ordnance M1.
