welcome to THR!
before we answer that question we need some back ground info. what is the primary use and what do you wish to achieve with it? what ranges do you plan to shoot, and what if anything do you want to hunt?
both are great rifle but we need some help here to help you.

personally i would say go for the ar, lots of mods, and upgrades to make it suitable for anything you might need it for with in reason of course. plus ammo is generally cheaper. they are great for hd, hunting varmits, traget shooting, can be made very accurate if you want them to be.

I do believe personally that the m1a is th greatest semi auto rifle ever created they are a little more pricy to get into to begin with, but they are great guns and they have there place. give us some more info and we can help you futher, in your search.

For home defense
is that it, no other uses?
i would say ar all the way then.

this is how i have mine set up.
bushmaster ar with 16" barrel flattop. buis. eo-tech sight. knights rail system, flashlight, vert foregrip. 6 position buttstock, one point sling.flashlight, and bi-pod when i am shooting at longer ranges.

you could definetly get away with just a standard m4a2 or a3 type with cary handle and a flash light, you really don't need much more than that for hd. but i have mine set up that way because mine is used in multiple ways.

The M1A is not in the same class as an AR-15. The appropriate comparison would be an AR-10.

I had an M1A, and I realized to make it as good as I wanted it to be, it would need a custom stock with a cheek piece, to keep the scope from banging me in the eye. I never could get it zeroed correctly.

If I get an itch again to have an autoloader in 7.62 again, I'll get an AR-10.

AR is probably more useful

It can do more things and the aftermarket availability of parts would stagger your mind. 5.56 is much cheaper than .308 and easier to shoot. Nothing wrong with the M1A, but it is for a more specific purpose.

Save even more over the shotgun, and get a Saiga in 7.62x39mm. Less recoil, faster to shoot, just as reliable, shorter than a shotgun, and superior penetration. At home defense distances, it is just as easy to miss with a shotgun as it is with a rifle. The "spread" isn't going to turn a miss into a hit. That's hollywood stuff.

If it has to be between and AR and M1A for home defense, get the AR. Get a short one (16" barrel) with a collapsable stock to make it as manueverable as possible in your home.

My M1A will bring the fight to 600+yds with confidence, but I wouldn't want it to clear rooms with. Inside 100 yds, the AR is Very effective. inside a house, a short AR or a pistol will beat the M1A. Whatever you use, it needs to be a fightstopper - frangible 223 won't overpenetrate walls in the house. Carbine is easier to train than close fight pistol. Get the AR!

AR15, hands down.
Versatile: slap on a 16" upper for home defense/CQB, or a 20" free float for those long range shots at the 400 yard gong.

M1a is a great battle rifle, but for home defense, go for an AR with a telescoping stock and a light attachment, a 20 round mag, and you are good to go.

I suggest that you do some research on the cost/avaliability of 762X51 ammo versus 5.56 ammo. Surplus 762X51 ammo is hard to find now.

Pitching wedge or #1 Driver? Pick one! It all depends on what you want to do with it. If you just want to hit some golf balls, than either will do just fine.

I got a M1A because it's the best option for a semi-auto rifle we have in CA.

If I had the choice, I'd pick an AR for HD though. I tried clearing the house with my M1A and the barrel is too long when coming around corners and such. Maybe a M1A SOCOM would work better, but those are twice the price of an AR.

One? What is this 1 you speak of?
One M1A, one AR 15. No, no, this will not do.
OOhhhh, one AT A TIME. Okay, that is okay.
The US military bought them in the order of: '03 Springfield,M1 Garand, M1A (M14), then AR 15 (M16). I would suggest that you do the same.
