f you spray or hit them from 15 or 20 feet away and stand still, they won't see you and attack you if you don't move
Wasps and bees follow air currents as you move around they get caught up in the vortex(?) when you put pressure on them by slapping or whatever they will sting. You can also notice that when you disturb the nest the first on will almost always make a beeline for you, if it or any other gets you it releases a pheremone that tells every wasp in the area to sting you

Sounds like what I understand. I have never come across the big ones either. I would have to be careful until I knew for sure how to deal with them.

I still think running away is stupid unless you can duck around the side of the house real quick or something. Like I said, I have sprayed them among other things. If I stood still, sprayed, and stayed still, they always scattered off the nest, but never close to me. That assumes you are not disturbing the nest up close. If they are already attacking you, all bets are off though. :)

I have been stung by bees before, but I was closer than 15 feet and being a stupid kid. They were buzzing me before I could even turn to run. The big wasps may be better at group defense tactics as well. :)

Running away is the only logical and recommended tactic to take when being attacked by wasps, bees and hornets. Run upwind if possible
