Hi All

I am restoring a Marlin from 1962 and in doing so when I took the sight off it ripped the screws out of the barrel. I sent in for new screws and hope only they are stripped. Does anyone know of a replacement sight that can be attached by a band, or what is the next best thing to do if the screws don't work? Do I have to have a gun smith bore larger screws?

Thanks

John

Brother, if you are attaching a sight "by band", you are not doing a "restoration" of a 336. In fact, it sounds like you are screwing the whole thing up. :)

How did you rip the screws/front sight off?? :scrutiny:

Solution:

Have a qualified gunsmith cut the barrel back to 18.5" and reinstall the sight and band for you. 18.5 inches is a very useful carbine length, and it is a length that I hear people cutting the 336 back to very often.

Good luck!! :D

If the threads in the barrel are stripped...re-tap them to the next larger thread size, drill the holes in the front sight out enough so the larger screws will fit through.

I recommend letting a gunsmith do this...

Well restoring might be the wrong phrase, I bought it and re-blued it, sanded and applied a new finish to the wood. When removing the sight, the dove tail didn't come loose and the whole site ripped out of the barrel. On this gun you cannot get to the screws until you knock the site out of the dove tail.

Enough said I will take it to a gun smith I really don't care what kind of sight he puts on the front.

Step 1, you don't knock the sight out of the dovetail with a hammer and punch, you use a sight pusher with a screw thread. I learned that by experience one time, too.
