Used Marlin lever guns have been creeping up in price over the last two or three years.
If it's very clean and a non crossbolt safety that price is not totally out of the ball park but it would never hurt to try to get it down a few bills.
Go over to GunBroker and you can get an idea on pricing.
I paid 220 in a parking lot for one 4 years ago. the wood was way cheesy what with the stamped deer heads an all, but sand it down, stain it brown and go to town! With a little action work it became the slickest 336 I've ever worked. Shot pretty well too. 350 tax included is not good, but not a robbery. 350+ tax and I'd pass.
Prices from 3-4 years ago have less and less bearing on today's prices since Remington bought Marlin and so far has had trouble producing lever actions of the same quality that Marlin did. $350 for a clean rifle is more than fair. $400 is on the high side, but fair if the condition is great, and $300 is a great deal.
Ray,in my opinion a 3x9 is way too much scope for your typical lever action carbine.
The scope in itself is decent but again it's way over scoping your typical 336 carbine.
Will it work?...Why certainly..But it's way too much bulk for a short carbine rifle.
Short, low power, and light is the best balance for these types of carbines.
Fwiw my old 336 sports a now discontinued Burris 2x7x26 Timberline scope.
The deal sounds reasonable for a clean 336. I've been very happy with a fixed-power 2.5X Weaver on mine. A variable 3X9 would be overkill, in my humble opinion.
